There are thousands of websites that keep the stuff you're uploading or doing on it, they just don't communicate it (somewhere really small in the TOS) and therefore it doesn't become that public like on Facebook.

As GameBear said, Adblock Plus for Firefox does miracles for hiding all those pesky adverts, not only on facebook, but on every website.
Ad block also allows you to hide other elements or ads on websites that might slip through, or you can choose to allow adverts to appear on websites that you want them to (for whatever reason that might be!).
