Shadow play

There is something magical about shadows. They can amuse, scare, protect, fade or intensify but given a little light, they are always there. It should be no surprise that the children’s story of Peter Pan should start with the eponymous hero searching for his lost shadow, so tragically torn from him when a window was slammed down upon it. For like Peter, who never grew up but remained a boy, our shadows do not really age.

Walk down the road with the sun behind you and your shadow will go before you. Your shadow, like Dorian Grey does not have a receding hairline neither does it show wrinkles, age spots on its hands or any other signs of aging. At a certain angle it may display a stoop that resembles that of its owner, it may share a limp, but it never fails to keep in step or lag behind even though it may stoically follow. Try jumping and it will disconnect only to re-join you the instant you hit the floor.

Change the angle of the light and a shadow will lengthen, shorten, move from side to side but it can’t escape. Your most faithful and only life-long companion!
