In addition to pushing both unilateral and multilateral sanctions, Washington will use the "full extent" of its intelligence capabilities to monitor Gadhafi's regime and gather evidence of atrocities committed against the Libyan people, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.
Steps were also taken to ensure that top Gadhafi officials don't steal Libyan financial assets in what may be their final days in power. The Treasury Department advised banks to monitor accounts held by the regime's key political figures and to report financial transactions "that could potentially represent misappropriated or diverted state assets," according to a government statement.

So the US is collecting info to prosecute ghadaffi, and it has stopped his ability to get at his money, and the money of the nation of Libya

The new steps against Gadhafi's government were announced less than an hour after a flight chartered by the U.S. government departed Tripoli for Istanbul. The flight carried personnel from the U.S. embassy and other American citizens.

The US is STILL working as we speak to get the rest of the 5000 americans estimated to be there out safely. There are now reports of evacuations proceeding by Sea and Air. No Doubt there are land movements organized as well, and for security reasons we have not heard of them.

Obama is organizing a global response with our vital allies. Until that is done we have NO idea of what that response will look like.

Obama spoke Thursday with the leaders of France, Italy and the United Kingdom on coordinating an international response to the crisis in the north African nation.

George Sayar, who was in Libya with his Florida-based construction company building roads and bridges, described the airport scene as "utter chaos."
"I would say there was approximately 30-40,000 people, most of them without tickets, trying to get into the three entrances to the terminal," Sayar told CNN on Friday. "We pretty much had to push and shove our way through thousands of people, and myself and two of my colleagues finally made it after about three hours of pushing, shoving, and kicking."
Another contractor who managed a tight escape was Cyrus Sany, who was working as an electrical engineer in Libya for a Virginia-based firm. He said it took him six hours to get from the airport parking lot to the ticket counter.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, in what he said is his final address to the cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, warned Friday against the United States getting involved in another major land battle.
He told the cadets that wars like Afghanistan are not likely, and in fact he would advise against it.
"In my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should 'have his head examined,' as Gen. MacArthur so delicately put it," Gates said.
Gates remarks contrasted with some in America who are pushing for the U.S. military to take a more active role in other places like Libya, where huge groups of protesters are trying to overthrow the government of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

This is interesting, because I heard Blitzer talking about rumors of a no fly zone being negotiated in the UN.

I can't find any articles to support that though, so if anyone has read one on that or something that says this is NOT being acted upon, it would be great...|
 
Gadhafi only has control of one city now, Tripoli, the rest of Libya having fallen to opponents according to Anderson Cooper now reporting. Gadhafi is down to 5,000 troops still loyal to him. However, it looks like he might go out in a blaze of glory and take as many folks with him as he can, kind of a Rev. Jim Jones mentality. Estimated that 1000 (or possibly many more) have now been butchered. Many were mowed down by military firepower as they left Friday prayers at a mosque.

I'll point out that the no-fly zone is the closest thing to a use of military force so far discussed by anyone. It's merely been proposed, nothing more at this point. I heard one comment that there's a concern if any military force is even brought near, Qadaffi may just decide to slaughter people. I certainly wouldn't put it past him.
 
Arab organizations from 18 countries, coordinating their effort with 30 Arab intellectuals, called on world leaders to impose an U.N.-sponsored and Arab-led no-fly zone in Libya to protect innocent civilians there.

The call for civilian protection was aimed to influence the U.N. Security Council, the European Union, the African Union, and the Arab League. It was timed to influence discussions at the Security Council and the U.N. Human Rights Council over the coming days. The organizations hail from countries including Egypt, Libya, Qatar, Morocco, Yemen, Syria, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia.

This is where the No Fly Zone idea is coming from apparently. Notice they are not asking the US in anyway to do this directly.

It would seem that the US is ruling that out for now.

Egypt, Syria, and Saudia Arabia could handle that. The U.S. could provide refueling and intel backup if asked -- thought the EU would be a better choice, since they're neighbors.

According to some sources, the EU is at least considering it.

EU nations are preparing to take part in a possible no-fly zone over Libya to prevent Moamer Gaddafi from bombing protesters in case the UN approves such a measure, an EU diplomat said Friday.

European Union governments are making "contingency plans" to police Libyan airspace but "the EU needs a UN Security Council resolution first," the diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

I would think Gadhafi's air force planes could be carpet bombed/destroyed on the ground as we did immediately with Saddam Hussein's air force. This would limit his ability for destruction. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have air forces mostly composed of US planes anyway. Not sure Egypt would or could participate at the present time due to having their own plate full.

I don't see why Egypt's air force shouldn't be able to participate -- they aren't really needed for anything pressing in Egypt. And it would be a fantastic symbol of the common aspirations (as they say).
 
The regime's former justice minister made a final appeal by radio in an attempt to bring an end to Colonel Gaddafi's rule without massive slaughter.

Gaddafi's enemies believe his 42-year rule will be over within days, but fear after his speech on Friday that he will order a massive attack on civilians as his final act.

Obviously Gaddafi is so isolated now that it can only be a matter of hours or a few days before he is undone.

With the Libyan mission to the UN resigning yesterday and the growing stream of defections, fingers crossed that he is rendered impotent and unable to massacre his own people before he is strung up.

Former security forces said they had switched sides and joined the opposition in Zawiya, a town about 55 kilometers (35 miles) from the capital, Tripoli. Some buildings in Zawiya showed signs of damage, including a freshly burnt-out police station.
CNN's Nic Robertson saw armed civilians taking defensive positions on rooftops to prepare for a possible effort by Gadhafi loyalists to retake the town.

If we act is will not be unilateral as he seems to want people to believe. IF we do the no fly zone with our allies, it will not be under our banner.
