Just as an aside, when I hear "grab your ankles", it reminds me of middle school P.E., and it meant "the paddle" was coming due to some infraction.

I think holes have more to do with the moment of impact than reducing the drag coefficient as the paddle is traveling toward its destination. Holes lessen the cushion-effect of air that is present in the recipient’s apparel.
