Are fat guys accepted at gyms and in locker rooms? I go to gyms and I never see guys who are out of shape. Everyone I see is hot guys who work out regularly.

If a fat or chubby guy was working out and stripped down when they went into the locker room to shower, would you care? Would you give the fat guy funny looks? Would you laugh and joke about him?

I've seen them a lot at gyms I went to. Depends which ones you go to probably.

Would they get funny looks? Maybe. But why? Unless its a highschool lockerrroom, then its all grown men who would probably applaud [silently] at some level this chubby guy for working on his weight problem. I've never seen anyone make fun of the fat guy at the gym. Isn't that why he is there? Good for him.

Well said, Bama.

I think that people are people. Of course there will be some guys, who will make jokes/comments behind your back, but there will also be guys who will think it's good that you are putting forth the effort. There is a guy at my club who is 6'2''-6'4'' and weighs 450+ or something like that. He works out, uses the steamroom, showers and I have never heard anyone makes negative comments. I have only heard things about the greatness of his effort.

Ultimately, you need to go for you and your health. Fuck what anyone else thinks. Besides, if you don't go and stay in the condition you are in, then the fit, jocks win. Why give them that much power?

I see a few fat guys in the locker rooms, I don't really care if they are fat or not. Well if I want to have sex with them, then yeah I care but more power to them for not being shy and embarassed about their body. Need to get past that point to actually have the power to get back into shape.

Maybe that's why there's such a problem with obesity in this country, we've become a country where the chunky guys are afriad to go to the gym, which is exactly where they need to be!

I would never laugh at a fat guy in the gym, I would applaud him for getting off his duff and doing something about it.

It's a locker room ffs - while we gay guys tend to ogle the hot straight guys there, for the straight guys it's usually no big deal who else is there. And if I would see a fat guy in there I would even think "Cool finally a chubby guy who does something to get in shape!". That alone is worth my respect, because many people just tend to let themselves go.

There are plenty big guys who are trying to get in shape at my gym as well and fair play to them for doing so. It's not been an issue at any of the gyms I've been a member of.

Having said that, numbers of guys using locker rooms for anything other than storing their stuff while they're gymming have declined noticeably in my time there, fat or in shape, young or old.

i go to the YMCA and its mostly older bigger wrinkly guys in there haha

I've plenty of overweight guys in the gym and I haven't seen anyone give them dirty looks or snide comments. I don't really look down on someone who's overweight in the locker room. I think it's great that they are deciding to take control of their health. We are all adults and everyone comes in different shapes and sizes. I'll probably be annoyed if they only use the locker room as some place to get a quickie. However, that applies to everyone.

Well, I just started going to the gym. I go right after work in the morning, and that alone brings forth a whole different array of people. There are a couple of heavy-set people, some medium, some toned, some skinny...

If I saw a fat guy taking a shower or changing, I wouldn't care. I mean, that's what you're there to do. LOL not have a hook up ahaha! Although I've heard stories...

Anywho, a lot of people seem to be rather friendly at my club. I guess it's just me who seems to not want to talk to anyone since i always have my ipod on whenever i go in ahah

In the shower room at my gym everybody just either ignores everyone else or pretends to. The old wrinkly guy, the tubby guy, the gorgeous 19 year old muscle boy, they all are a matter of complete indifference. It's kind of weird.

he's in the gym in the first place to reduce his fats, so why would people bother to care to make fun of him.

i might even applaud him for his efforts.

My local gym is quite big and you get a really wide spread of ages and sizes. I've seen some huge guys there and I always think 'good for you!' There's a slim, pretty healthy looking guy who I just found out is 82. He's my inspiration. I get a bit irritated by the fat people (usually women) who walk endlessly up and down sipping from their water bottles but never actually doing anything!!

I guess the only thing I find a bit "odd" is that I've seen over-weight people that frequent the gym and still look the same. I think that's due to leaving the gym and then going to McDonalds for a burger and fries.[-X Just my observation.

Yeah, there are a couple of guys like this at my gym. They're always saying how they're here to lose weight, but all I seem to see them doing is talking about it in the sauna.

There is one guy who is huge and claims to be there for fitness and weight loss, but in the 4 years I've been a member there I've never seen him do anything other than float in the pool (float on his back, no arm/leg movement) for 20 minutes and then go sit in the steam-room. I kind-of want to remind him that his body is not going to do the improvements by itself.

I've never seen anybody made fun of or talked about in the locker room, nor do I think fat guys are out of place in the locker room. However, at least at the gym I go to, there really aren't many fat or terribly out of shape people there. I am sure for some of them, it is too itimidating to go to the gym, which is really a shame.

However, of the few really overweight people that I've seen at my gym, few of them really seem to work out. There was one really fat guy that used to go to my gym, but NEVER worked out. He just went into the sauna and then showered afterwards. The middle aged guys at my gym are in pretty good shape and the young guys are mostly in great shape, with the exception of some very chubby young Latino guys who never do any cardio and just do some lifting.

There is so much obesity in our society I wish more overweight people felt confident enough to go to the gym, or at least do some other physical activity so they can lose weight.

the only people that are looked down upon in the locker room are the perpetual talkers (that don't actually exercise). If you exercise you will actually be applauded for making a lifetsyle change.

As one of those fat blokes who is trying to reverse years of drinking beer, a crap diet and being generally lazy, this is an encouraging thread. I remember the first time I went to the gym and how intimidating/embarrassing it was getting my wobbly bits out when all around me was CK/A&F model wannabe's. With the constant media pressue to be toned / tanned etc I was worried but soon realised that the vast majorty didn't actually care how fat you are.
And as everyone knows, a bit of fat gives you something to hold on to..
