Yeah, I've had this idea for a story in my head for a while, so I took a crack at it. I'm a serious writer and I try hard to get it good and interesting. I have never seen ANYTHING like this story on the boards, so I hope to keep you all on the edge of your seats ](*,)

I have NEVER SEEN ANTHING like this on the boards...so i have no idea how this will turn out.

Here it goes:

Fate
____________

Chapter 1

I looked out the window; I could see the stacks of smoke off in the distance. I had to admit, yeah, I was scared. He came up behind and wrapped his arms around me.
“They’re gonna reach the city, we hafta get out of here.”
“Yeah I know, tomorrow, I have to still pack.” He turned me around and gave me a kiss.

The war had been going on for about not even a year, and already the enemy was at our doorstep. People we’re leaving the city so fast that the streets quickly went from bustling with people to almost the occasional person walking by every 20 minutes or so. I looked him up and down; what I saw was a tall, 5’8, 21 year old white guy, with short brown hair, and big brown eyes. He had the body of an athletic person, from playing sports all his life, like his father intended.

“I really don’t wanna be here when those tanks end up knocking at our door, but I ain’t going anywhere unless you’re with me.” He came up to me and gave me a hug. I was still looking out the window, at the smoke in the distance.
“We’ll leave with everyone else, I promise Tom…” He let go of me.
“Ok…I’m gonna make sure we got everything, you gonna go next door?”
“Yeah, I’ll see you in a bit.” He walked downstairs and smiled back at me. I walked to the mirror, to make sure I was ok for leaving our apartment. I saw a tall, about 6’0 white man. I had messy, short dark hair, from just waking up. I had some muscle, from working at the factory, making sure the tanks it produced we’re in working order, all for the war effort. I had blue eyes, which I just noticed for some reason after all these years. I guess I was average, for being 20 years old.

When I walked outside, the Air Raid sirens sounded, they still made me jump every time. I didn’t listen to them anymore, most of the time, no planes came and no bombs we’re dropped. I ignored it and went next door, to my good friend Tanya’s house. She was my friend all the way back in diapers, and I trusted her with my life.

When I got there, she was packing too; one bag was all she had.
“Hey there David, I’m just packing, I’m out of here tomorrow with you guys, remember?”
“Yeah, those damn sirens get me every time!” She just laughed.
“Yeah I saw you jump, where’s Tom?”
“Packing, he wants to get the hell out of the city, that’s for sure, so do I; can you see the smoke out there?” I looked out the window, but I could barely tell over the trees outside.
“Yeah, rumor has it; the front is falling back…” She stopped to put a shirt in her bag.
“Guess our forces aren’t doing as good as the propaganda puts it out to.” She looked at the clock she had on the wall.
“You better go, your gonna need sleep for tomorrow, bright and early, we’re out of here to the other side of the river.” She handed me a loaf of bread.
“What is this for?” I asked.
“Trust me, your gonna wish you had that when we get to the other side.” I put it in my bag I brought and walked out.
“See you tomorrow then.” She smiled and continued packing her bag.

I got back to our apartment building; Tom was sitting there, staring out the window.
“I have to admit, I’m fucking scared, and you know they say there getting miles closer to the city every hour.”
“Don’t worry; soon we’ll be across the river, safe and sound…” I came up to him and sat on his lap, smiling. I leaned in and kissed him. The City had a natural defense, a River that was miles across called the “Dynes” River. Boats came back and forth, with supplies and people. I could see he was scared, we had heard rumors of towns occupied by the enemy, and they were ruthless. I was scared as well.
“It’ll be ok, we’ll be ok, don’t worry.” He gave me a weak smile and gave me a kiss. I sat down next to him, and put my head on his shoulder, staring out the window. We had only been together for a year. We met during school and gradually move in together. I loved him, and as far as I knew, he loved me. Both our dads were at the front, and our moms had both left the city a long time ago.

We stared at the smoke. You could barely make out a flash from a bomb occasionally, as the sky was cloudy, it was easier to see.
“You look hot today…” I said, trying to turn his attention from the window. He smiled back.
“Thanks…not so bad yourself today…” He made a quick look down to his pants and looked back, I knew what he wanted. He got up, and moved to the bed. He laid down and I un-did his pants. I took them off and he threw his head back on the pillow. His dick flopped out, and I licked his balls to make it stand straight up. He closed his eyes as I licked his 8 inches up and down. I moved and up and licked the head, which made him, moan softly. I continued this for about 5 minutes, before he made me stop and he jerked off until he cummed. His cum landed on his chest and he let out a sigh.

The Air Raid sirens went off suddenly; he jumped up and put his pants back on. I stood up.
“It’s ok…probably a false alarm…like always.” He stopped and laid back down.
“Yeah…I’m scared David, I don’t wanna die.” I laid down next to him and hugged him.
“You won’t, trust me, now go to sleep before morning, I know it’s only the late afternoon, but you’ll need it.” He turned and looked at me.
“Promise me you won’t leave; promise me you’ll be here when I wake up, that you won’t go to the other bank without me.” I kissed him and smiled.
“I promise, I won’t leave you, now go to sleep, I’ll be here when you wake up.” I gave him another kiss for reassurance and he turned back around and stared out the window.
“Ok, you know what? Let’s switch spots so you don’t stare out.” I pulled him over and moved to where he was.
“I love you David.” He said.
“I love you too Tom, now sleep before I knock you out.” I said smiling. He laughed and closed his eyes. I went to sleep, with the last thing I saw being a flash of a bomb and the huge smoke stacks.

It was only a few hours later when I woke up to Tanya shaking me.
“WAKE UP! The sirens are sounding and tanks have been seen moving to the suburbs of the city, WE HAVE TO LEAVE NOW!!” She yelled. A slight shake of the building was all I needed to get up and wake Tom up. He got up and grabbed the bag and ran to the door, with Tanya behind him.
“Let’s get to the boats quick!” She said. I stopped and ran back and grabbed the bag with the loaf of bread and put it on my arm. We ran outside, I could hear bangs from bombs and gun fire. My heart was racing. We ran behind our building and could see the boats flooding with people trying to get on. It surprised me how many people were even left in the city. I looked and I could see flashes off in the distance on the roads leading away from the city, with the sirens blazing. The sun was still going down, with the moon beginning to show.

We ran down the bank of the river to a boat, with Military police guiding the crazed people on, I looked at Tom and he had his focus on the boat. He and Tanya threw their bags up on the boat and got on. I threw my bag of bread up and tried to get up, but a MP stopped me and threw me down back on the dock.
“The boats full wait for the next one!” He said. I heard loud buzzing behind me and I turned around. A plane was flying towards the docks. The MP and others around him started firing their Guns at it. I ducked and covered my head. The plane flew over and flew off, the MP’s still firing.
“GET THE BASTARD!!” He yelled, still firing. I ran to the boat and got on without him seeing. Tom grabbed me and he sat down on the boat holding my hand, Tanya next to him.

“GET THE BOAT MOVING!” A sailor yelled. The boat started leaving the dock and I took the chance to hug Tom.
“You ok? Please say your ok!” I said.
“I’m fine, let’s just get to the other bank.” I looked at Tanya and she was staring at the water with an expressionless stare. I looked up and saw Tons of planes flying from the clouds, in “V” Formations; they were dropping bombs all over the city. I looked down and I grabbed Tom and he looked down too. I could hear the bombs going off in the city. I looked at Tom and saw he was scared.

The boat got to the other bank, people starting to get off. We three jumped off with our bags and looked at each other. We were scared, really scared, but we were safe. The boat took off and headed back to the other side. We grabbed our 3 bags and walked off. We walked to a MP, who told us to go to a bunker for refugees, not saying a word along the way. When we got there a MP was handing out cards for civilians.
“You three made it across?” He asked.
“Yeah…” I replied.
“God was with you then, I have a place for you three to go to, a tent on this side of the river, then we will move you safer place farther back.” He handed us three cards and we walked back. I looked at the city along the way there. It was on fire, the planes were circling like vultures. I grabbed Tom’s hand, and we walked.

When we got to the tent, three beds were set up. We threw our stuff on them and I looked at Tom.
“TOM! Your ok right? Look at me!” I yelled. He looked up at me. I gave him a kiss and he stared.
“I’m fine, Oh God, I’m so glad you’re here!” He yelled and he hugged me. I looked at Tanya, and I gave her a hug.
“What? No Kiss?” She said with a weak smile.

I walked outside and I stared at the city. Boats were coming back and forth with people. The city was on fire, planes were over head. I tried to find our apartment building, but I couldn’t see it through the flames and smoke. I sat down, and Tom came out. He sat next to me and put his head on my shoulder.
“I love you so much…I thought we were gonna die on that boat when that plane flew over.”
“Yeah…we’re ok now at least.” He scooted closer to me.
“What now?” He asked.
“I guess we’ll get moved back…I hope so…Where’s Tanya?”
“She’s asleep.” I wanted to know what was going to happen, I wanted to, I wanted whatever to happen, to happen with Tom and Tanya with me.

But I had no idea what was going to happen.

Chapter 2

“I’m hungry…Give me that bread.” Tom said. I handed it to him and he broke a piece off.
“Told you we would need it.” Tanya said.

It was the next day; the sun was barely showing through the smoke. I didn’t get much sleep thanks to the rumble of the guns and bombs. We were still in our tent. The Fires of the city illuminated the whole bank of the river all night. Outside the tent was chaos, people running everywhere in a fuss trying to figure out what was going on.
“They’re handing out newspapers in the next row of tents, I’ll be right back.” I said.
“See if you can find some food or water or something.” Tom said. I nodded and walked out.

Outside was hectic. Ashes from the city were falling all over the ground. Tents were in rows of four, with people crowding inside them. When I got to the newspaper, a young boy was handing them out. His face was dirty and he was really skinny. I took a paper from him and said thank you and walked away. I couldn’t believe what I was reading on the front page. “Valiant Defenders of the City” The city was to be held at all costs. I stopped and sat down on a pile of boxes. As I read it the rest of the paper, what I read made my heart skip a beat. “No one, No Civilian or Soldier, Is to leave the city, the city will be Held at ALL COSTS” We weren’t leaving.

When I got to the tent, Tom was lying down on his bed and Tanya was sifting through her bag.
“Find anything?” Tom asked.
“No…Here read this, skip to the last sentence.” I sat down next to him and put my head on his shoulder.
“What’s it say Tom?” Tanya asked.
“I can’t believe it… no civilians can leave the city! We’re stuck here.” Tanya grabbed the paper and read it herself.
“Fuck dammit!” She yelled. At that moment a MP walked in our tent.

“I’m looking for Civilian #224 who lives in this tent?” He looked around at us. I knew 224 was Tom, and I knew what he wanted. No one was answering him so he got a little frustrated.
“Ok, Show me your cards.” Tanya gave out hers, and he looked and walked to me, He saw mine and walked to Tom. Tom gave out his card and the MP stopped and looked at him.
“Let’s go.” He said. I stepped in front of the MP and he got his gun and put it in my chest.
“Move it!” He said.
“No! Ok, I know food is scarce, I’ll give you that bread if let him stay!” I gave him the loaf of bread and he looked at me.
“Civilian #224 could not be found.” He said, he put the loaf in his pocket and walked out.

“You didn’t have to give him our food.” Tom said, lying back down on his bed. I laid on top of him and gave him a kiss.
“You know they were gonna draft you into fighting in the city, and no way am I letting you go!” I stopped and gave Tom another kiss.
“You’re worth it anyway.” I said.
“You two are SO CUTE!” Tanya yelled, ruining the moment.

All of a sudden the air raid sirens sounded. I looked outside to see a plane falling from the clouds to a train that was parked a few miles away. People stopped and ducked. Tanya covered her head and Tom fell to the ground. For some reason I couldn’t look away. I stared at it as it flew like a bird over the tents. The Anti-Air guns opened up. The plane dropped one bomb and destroyed a car before it was blown out of the sky by the guns, and landed in the river. After 5 minutes the sirens stopped and people got back up. Tanya got up and sat down on her bed. Tom was shaking on the ground.

I grabbed Tom and stood him up. He was breathing heavy and shaking a little bit. I grabbed him and hugged him and squeezed him.
“Tom…it’s over, the planes gone, calm down…” He didn’t reply. I laid him down on the bed and I laid next to him. I hugged him and after about two minutes, he stopped.
“Go to sleep…everything will be ok when you wake up.” I said. After about five minutes, I heard him give a snore and I rolled over to see Tanya sitting on the bed across from me.

“We have to get out of here, if the enemy doesn’t get us, we’ll get drafted into the fighting inside the city.” Tanya said. Tom was snoring next to me, fast asleep.
“I’m more worried about Tom, you saw him just now, he’s going to lose it if he stays here longer.” Suddenly, an explosion in the city scared me and when I looked, I saw a whole building fall. The City was in ruins, but there were still people fighting inside it. To me, it looked like hell.

The Air Raid sirens sounded again. I ran outside to see about ten planes plunging from the clouds. The sirens woke Tom up and he ran to me and stared upwards.
“Let’s go!” I yelled. We ran out of the tent. A plane dropped a bomb on the train and the back end of it lit up. Anti-Sir guns were firing like mad; people were running around looking for cover. I saw some trenches and we ran to them and ducked. The explosion and guns were loud. I grabbed Tom and Tanya and we huddled close. I couldn’t hear anything anymore, the bombs and guns were deafening. The trench we were in led to a bunker, which the planes targeted. One dropped a bomb and had a direct hit on it. The explosion knocked me back several feet and I was knocked out.

When I woke up, I was on a table, with a man looking over me.
“You ok man? You’ve been out for a while.” He said.
“I think so…”
“Get up and walk around, see if anything hurts.” I got up and besides a monster headache, I could walk and I seemed in one piece.
“I grabbed you after I saw you get knocked back…” I looked around, I was in a tent.
“I’m George, I came across the river a couple days ago, and it really is hell in there.” My head was killing me, but I didn’t see Tom or Tanya around me so I jumped up.
“Where’s the people I was with?! The two, a guy and a girl!? Where did they go?!” I yelled.
“I don’t know, I saw them still huddling when a plane flew over them, I didn’t stop, I just pulled you.” I ran out, what I saw was complete devastation from the air raid. Holes were in the ground everywhere, and people were walking around gathering everything that they could. George ran out after me.
“Wait up!” He yelled, but I didn’t. I ran to our tent, or at least where it was. It was gone, and a hole from an explosion was in its place. I wanted to drop down and kill myself…but I stopped and ran to the trench, it was gone as well…An explosion hole was in its place too. George ran up to me to see me on the ground, crying. I felt a hand on my back, and I shook it off. Then I heard Tom speak.
“David…we’re right here…we ran to avoid the plane, we made it.” I got up and I kissed him as hard as I can and hugged him.
“Fuck dammit, don’t fucking do that!” He let a slight chuckle out.
“Sorry…Tanya went to find some water.” I hugged him and squeezed him crying.
“Thanks for saving my boy here.” Tom said to George. “Wow…you two are….a couple?” George said. Tom nodded, with me still hugging him. “That’s…..cool…I guess” George I could tell was uncomfortable. I let go. I wanted to get out of there, and I was going to.

Tanya came up with a water bucket.
“Got some…” She said. I grabbed Tom’s hand and motioned for the others to follow. I walked to a truck, with no one around it. I opened the door and the others stopped and stared at me.
“Come on, we’re leaving the front.” I said. George got in and sat down.
“He’s right, I’ve been in the city, and I’m not staying here.” I motioned for Tom to get in and he stopped.
“What about the guards?” He asked.
“There focusing on the damage…Come on Tom, I’m leaving, but not without you.” Tom got in and sat down next to me, I could tell he didn’t like it.
“Come on Tanya, hold the water.” She got in the middle of Tom and George. I turned the truck on with the keys that were already in the ignition, and all of a sudden everybody around us looked at us. I sped off, but a few MP’s weren’t happy about us taking the truck. A MP motioned for a tank that was driving by to block our path. I could feel Tom to start shaking again.

I sped off as fast as possible to avoid the tank, but it was cutting us off.
“STOP THE TRAITORS!” I heard a MP yell. I turned sharply and we missed the tank, and I sped off down the road into the Forest behind the river.
“Why didn’t they fire?” George asked.
“I don’t know…” I replied.
“Where are we gonna go?” Tom asked.
“I don’t know…” I replied again. I gave him a kiss and he put his head on my shoulder, and we drove off, as the sun was setting. I looked in the mirror to see the MP’s just staring at us and the Tank turning it’s around and driving away.

Chapter 3

Fate

“Here drink some. You have to be thirsty.” Tom said, trying to hand me water.
“No, drink it, I’m fine.” I really wanted some water, but I wanted to make sure Tom got some first. We had been driving for a while now; the fires from the city were still visible miles away. We stopped along the forest line, well off the road to avoid the passing military to rest. George fell asleep in the back of the truck, and Tanya fell asleep in the front, leaving me and Tom.

“Drink some water already, I know you’re thirsty.” Tom said, trying to get some water in my mouth.
“No, I’m fine, drink it already.” I said, shooing him away from me. We were sitting down on a fallen tree log that was next to the truck. The first snow of the season was beginning to fall, I had put on some jackets that were stored in the back of the truck, and so did Tom. I grabbed a blanket and put it around him.
“Here…stay warm…maybe go to the back and sleep…” I was trying to make sure he was holding up ok. I looked at him; I realized that for the first time in all the time we had been together, I loved him. I loved everything about him. But there was always something in the back of my head, all the time, the fact that he had cheated on me before, with someone from my factory, I was thinking what to do with that whole mess lately, but then war broke out and it moved to the back of my head.

“I’m going to sleep Tom…” I got up and he got up to follow me.
“I’ll join you, I could use some sleep.” He said. That image of that other man was in my head and I didn’t want to sleep with him.
“Nah, go to the front with Tanya, it’s warmer up there.” I pointed to the front and he stopped.
“You don’t wanna sleep with me?” He said. I didn’t answer and I climbed in the back. He got in behind me and laid down next to me. I shrugged him off.
“What the fuck!? What did I do?!” He yelled.
“You cheated on me…now go up front.” I said, nearly crying.
“There’s nothing I can do about that now!! God damnit!! You know I love you!! What more do the hell you want?! I regret it now!! …” He got up when George stirred a little from the yelling, and he went to the front of the truck and slammed the door, and I lay there, crying.

We woke up a few hours later and we each had a drink of water and we got in the car. Tom sat at the other side of the truck and I sat next to Tanya, I felt a mixture of mad and sad, but I was focusing on finding a place to get out of the cold.
“There should be a village up ahead…my Grandma should live there, if she hasn’t moved like she always does.” George said. As we turned out of the forest, we could see some huts up ahead. The snow was picking up now.
“We can stay there.” He said, pointing to a House with smoke coming out the top.
“Good, does she have a hot meal? Because I’m fucking starving!” Tanya said, rubbing her stomach. I looked at Tom and he kept his focus looking out the window. I wanted to cry, but I couldn’t

When we walked inside, a smell of freshly baked bread was in the air. A small old woman walked out and hugged George.
“And where in the hell have you been? I’ve written and written to you and you NEVER answer! Now who are these people?” She said, putting on a smile.
“These are my friends; we managed to escape the front lines of the city.” He said, sitting down on an old wooden chair.
“Oh really? I heard its hell down there, a lot of people around here have been drafted…you look hungry sweetie!” She said, motioning at Tanya.
“Oh hell yeah I am! I smell bread!” Tanya said, and then realizing what she had just said stopped.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound…”
“Its fine sweetie…I understand, it’s not nice at the front I know…” She handed and piece of bread to Tanya who starting eating it; she continued talking. “You look tired my man! There’s an extra bed in the back room, go get sleep, we can catch up later.”
“Thank you so much…” I said, and I walked to the back room. Tom was still standing there, staring at my back as I walked away.

The back room was simple, a bed, a lamp, and a window. I got into the bed, focusing on the feeling of sheets again against my body. I was almost asleep when Tom walked in.
“I can’t change it, I would, you know.” He said, I didn’t answer, pretending to sleep.
“I know you’re awake.”
“Let me sleep, I don’t wanna talk right now.”
“Well, I do!” He jumped on my bed.
“You want me to apologize? Because I don’t think that will make you feel better.” He said. I just turned around.
“I’m sleeping now!” I said.
“Can I join you?” He asked. I thought about it. I thought about all the good things, the sex, the nights talking about our day, the fact that we live together…all that went into my head at once; it compelled me to let him.
“Sure, fine.” I opened the covers and he crawled in.
“I’m sorry, I…” I stopped him.
“It never happened, just shut the hell up, when we wake up, it’s over.” I said.

I woke up, with Tom still snoring next to me. It was snowing hard now, and I could hear engines outside. I got up without waking Tom and walked to the living room.
“What’s going on?” I asked George.
“A column of tanks is passing though the village, rumor has it, it’s the forces for the upcoming offensive inside the city.” I grabbed a piece of bread and sat next to the fire that was going on. The house was shaking thanks to the tanks. Tom walked out of the room.
“There are tanks outside!” He yelled.
“Relax; come here, its ok.” He sat next to me and I gave him a piece of bread. He ate it and put his head on my shoulder, I was getting used that feeling of his head on my shoulder.
“Where’s your grandma?” I asked.
“She’s getting some water down the street, she’ll be back. Tanya went with her. George was sitting there reading the newspaper, and me and Tom were staring at the fire.
“I’m sorry David…” He said.
“I told you, we’re awake now, it never happened.” He just sat there and ate his bread.

Grandma and Tanya busted through the door suddenly and started gathering food.
“Whoa Whoa, what’s up?” I asked.
“Tanks and infantry, Lot’s of them. The enemy has landed a beachhead up the river! They’re moving towards the village.” I jumped up and went to Tom, George ran outside to pack the truck.
“Tom, let’s go!” He didn’t move.
“I’m tired of running…leave me here…” I stood him up.
“Fuck no, your coming, let’s go!” I gave him a kiss.
“It’ll be ok, I promise.” I pushed him outside and put on my jacket and he put on his. Tanya and Grandma put baskets of bread and a bucket of water in the back of the truck.

I started the truck and I drove out the town. People we’re running everywhere, to cars and houses. Ahead the column of tanks was turning off the road towards the river, with infantry riding them like elephants.
“Where the fuck are we going to go!?” George yelled. I didn’t answer, because I didn’t know. An explosion near by rocked the truck. Tom started shaking, so I leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Don’t worry.” I said, but he didn’t stop shaking. I drove off outside the town. I turned around the hill and almost hit a tank that was trying to get off the road.

I looked off in the distance to see enemy tanks like ants off in the distance. I looked more closely to see one coming over the hill. I turned the truck to avoid it and it ignored us. It was a monster tank, it had two cannons on the front and I could see two holes on the front for machine guns. It moved slowly and it began to turn its massive twin cannons towards us.
“DAVID!” Tom yelled. He ducked and so did everyone else. I turned around the hill again and the tank fired, missing us and hitting the hill. I continued down the hill, soon the tanks disappeared and it got quiet again.

I stopped the truck near a crossroads and we sat there, just thinking and staring.
“Where to? One road leads to the river and the other leads to the capital city of Sole.” George said.
“We can go to Sole, I have family there.” Grandma said.
“Sole it is then…” I replied. I turned the truck, but suddenly Tom opened the door.
“I’m tired of running…I’m going home…” He said, and he got out and started walking down the road back to the river. I got out, with everyone else staring at us, motionless.

“No, don’t be fucking retarded, your coming with us!” I grabbed his hand but he pushed me off.
“I’m going home…I’m tired of this…” He said. I grabbed him and stopped him. The snow was falling heavily.
“NO! You’re coming with me, now!” I pulled him back towards the truck, and he fell to the ground and began crying.
“I wanna go home! I miss home! I miss waking up to you every morning…I miss a nice warm bed, I miss it all!” He yelled. I got down next to him and I gave him a kiss.
“So do I…but you have me! I’m not leaving without you, you have to come!” I yelled, and I kissed him again.
“I’m sorry about cheating on you…I never meant…I never…” He stopped because he started crying hard.
“It’s over, it’s done, get back in the truck Tom…sit next to me…I promise, I’ll never leave you…” I said. He got back up, still crying. I grabbed his hand and we walked back to the truck. He sat next to me and he put his head on my shoulder as we drove off. No one said a word along the way.

When we got to Sole, it was chaos. Military we’re everywhere. Rumor was that the City we fled was surrounded, and Sole was next on the enemy’s list.
“Right here, this house right here.” Grandma said. When we got there, it was warm inside, and a man and a woman were there.
“Hey dad…hey mom…” George said. They grabbed him and kissed him.
“I heard about the city…we’re glad you made it!” Tom grabbed my hand and squeezed hard.
“Who are these people?” They asked. Grandma looked at them with a blank stare.
“These two gentlemen here would like some time alone…” She said, pointing to us. They looked down at us holding hands and they stopped.
“There’s a room in the back…sleep all you want, food will be ready soon.”

We went to the back room, and Tom immediately stopped and hugged me.
“I love you…” He said. He laid down on the bed.
“You know my answer to that.” I said smiling. He smiled and kissed me.
“You heard the rumors…Sole is next…We’re gonna get stuck in street fighting!” I grabbed his hand.
“Go to sleep, don’t worry about that. And when you wake up, I’ll be here holding you…and we’ll have a nice hot meal…” He smiling and kissed me and he turned around and closed his eyes.

He was right, Sole was about to become the climax of the war, Sole was to be the deciding factor. I didn’t want to think about what was going to happen. I looked out the window to see barricades being set up in the streets and soldiers walking along.

I laid down next to Tom, and went to sleep, holding him and squeezing him.

Chapter 4

It was late into the night. The sun had set and I and Tom couldn’t sleep. Everyone else had gone to bed a long time ago.

“Come on, give me a kiss!” Tom yelled. He and I were messing around.

“No, get away!” He started to tickle me.
“Come on, you know you wanna!” He said. I just laughed.

“Ok Ok!!” I said, finally. I planted a big one, right on him, making sure to lose my tongue in his mouth.

Every now and then, the house would shake from a passing tank or truck. It was like the war kept reminding us it was there, outside the front door. Sole was being barricaded heavily. Down the street was a bunker that was being built, as many were being put up all over the city. Soldiers were going down inside the sewers with lots of crates and boxes…my guess was that they were putting ammo depots to be hidden.

“Remember when you would play sports in school? I would always stare at you...” I said. He smiled.

“Did you really?”

“Yeah…and when you would take your shirt off…oh my god…” He smiled and grabbed me and pulled me down to his lap.

“I thought you were really cute; remember we had a class together? I would always stare at you when you would take notes…you were the hottest nerd I had ever seen” He laughed and I just sat on his lap.

“Remember how we met? We were forced to work together for a project?” He stared at me like he was thinking.

“Oh yeah!” He stared at the fire.

“I didn’t want to work with you, because you were so hot…” He looked at me, surprised

“WERE!? I’m not now?”

“You know what I mean…” He stared at the fire, putting all his focus on it.

“I’m going to stay up Tom…go to bed…”

“You sure? I don’t want you to stay up all night, lonely…” I gave him a kiss.

“Go to bed…”

“Ok…night David…I love you…” He gave me a kiss and walked off to bed with a blanket wrapped around him.

I didn’t want to sit there, I had to move. I put my coat on and walked outside. It was surprisingly quiet. I could hear engines all around me, and the rumble of artillery off in the distance. I walked down the street; a man was sitting on his porch, with a gun in hand, and a cigar in the other. It was snowing lightly…and the flashes from fighting off in the distance lit up the sky every 5 or 10 seconds. I walked along, to the end of the street, and got approached by a man all of a sudden. He was in military uniform, with a gun in hand.
“I’m sorry; this street is to be closed for Military purposes.” He said, in a stern voice.

“Tell me, what’s going on at the front?” I asked suddenly. He stood there staring at me.

“I can’t tell you citizen.”

“Then tell me, are we surrounded?” He stood there, like he was thinking about the question. He put his head down, and nodded. I took it and walked away.

When I walked back in, it was empty, the fire was nearly out. I went to my room and lay down next to Tom, who was asleep. I stared at his face. I looked at his really, really short dark hair. I looked him up and down, and saw his muscles, to see he was in shape. Then I thought about his big, brown eyes. I realized that this was him. This was the man who I loved. I don’t know how we are ever going to survive this hell, stuck in a city that’s about to be stomped on. I fell asleep, looking at him.

I woke up, alone and cold in bed, the blankets had fallen off the bed. I rubbed my eyes and looked around, and noticed Tom wasn’t there. I got up and walked to the living room. There was Tom, Tanya and George. Tanya was reading the paper while George put wood on the fire, and Tom was sitting on the couch staring at the fire. Snow was falling heavily outside and the house kept shaking from passing vehicles. I sat down next to Tanya.

“Oh my god…read this!!” She threw the paper at me and pointed at the front page.

“Wow…” I said. It said Martial Law had been declared and all able bodies to report to the nearest military post to sign up for the defense of the city.

“Let me read it” Tom said, and I handed the paper to him. He read it aloud.

“I swear to god we never get a break…” He gave it back to Tanya, who continued to read it.

“So what are we going to do?” George asked. Before we had a chance to answer, the sirens sounded outside.

“Great! I’ll get the others; you guys go in the basement.” Tanya said. I looked at Tom. Who was frozen on the couch. I grabbed him and we went downstairs.

Tanya came down after us, with Grandma, and Georges parents, and closed the door behind them. The basement was small; it had a lantern and a couple boxes. George lit the lantern and sat down. The sirens were blaring up stairs, and we all sat there, looking at each other, not saying a word. I heard an explosion, and I knew immediately what was happening; it was an artillery barrage.

Dirt and dust fell from the ceiling with each hit. After a minute or two the lantern fell over and it got dark. I heard Tanya scream and then she was muted by the deafening artillery. I could feel Tom shaking again. I grabbed him and hugged him from the side, in pitch dark.

“Ok….don’t listen to the arty…” I didn’t know if he could hear me or not, but I talking right in his ear.

“Imagine…we’re at home…in the apartment…It’s a sunny day, I and you are in bed…covered by blankets…”

A shell hit something out front and it exploded, the arty was beating down on us. I continued in his ear.
“We’re both safe and sound…we just had breakfast at Tanya’s…we had some waffles…with some bacon and eggs…and we came home…” He was still shaking…more and more violently, I hugged him harder.

“We don’t leave the whole day…We stay in bed, we talk, and we have sex…it’s the best day ever…” He stopped shaking so violently…and I stopped, but I didn’t let go.

I didn’t know how long it was until the artillery stopped. It got quiet, and after the bombardment…it was strange to hear quiet. George walked up and had to beat the door open, some wood had been blown against it. He walked out and the others were behind him, which left me, Tom and Tanya down there.
“You ok Tom?” Tanya asked. He didn’t answer.

“Go up Tanya, help out…We’ll be up in a sec. She walked up slowly, leaving us.

“Tom…it’s me…David…Come on, let’s go upstairs…is that ok?” He looked up at me.

“We’re gonna die here aren’t we? Among the rubble…we’re gonna die…” I gave him a long kiss.

“No, we won’t…come with me.” I didn’t even believe what I just said....

Amazingly part of the house was still there. Half of it was gone, turned into a bunch of wood. I grabbed Tom’s hand as we walked. I walked to what used to be the front door; I saw a lot of other buildings weren’t so lucky. Fires were spread throughout the street we were on, and people walked among the rubble. All of us looked around like lost dogs; we had no idea what to do, or where to go.

I could hear explosions off in the distance.

“That must have been the bombardment…before they came into the city…” Everyone looked at me, like they didn’t want to hear it. A Tank rushed down the street suddenly, with soldiers on its back, they looked at us with blank stares as they zipped by. I looked at Tom, who was looking around as confused as I was.
“Everybody just take a deep breath and sit down on something solid.” Grandma said. We sat down, as ordered.

“Great, where are we going to go now? Our house is gone!” George’s mom yelled. I looked at her, and she looked back. I could see that she wanted to cry.

A truck stormed up the street, it stopped and more followed behind it. The others kept on going and the lead truck stopped in the front of the half of our house that was left. Soldiers jumped out, followed by one that was wearing a commander’s uniform.

“Gather them up!” He yelled. They spread out and grabbed everyone they saw that was walking. They grabbed George and other around him and forced them in a line. We stood up, but we didn’t run, we had nowhere to go.

“Men, you will defend this great city against the enemy…” As he was saying this, they handed guns to them.

“The enemy is fast and powerful, but they are fools! There supplies are running out, they have traveled all this way just to die! For every one of our soldiers they kill…you will make them pay, with ten of theirs! No one will fall back, no one! Any defeatists or cowards are to be shot on the spot!”

“I won’t fight!” George yelled, throwing his gun down. We all looked at him and so did the commander, with rage in his eyes.

“You will fight, or you will die here, on the spot!” He put his pistol in George’s face. George bent down slowly and picked up the gun, and the commander put his down and walked away. The soldiers were putting helmets on all of them.

“Tom…let’s go…Tanya!” I motioned for them to follow…Before I could motion for George’s parents, an explosion nearby threw us all to our feet.

“Artillery!” Someone yelled. I grabbed Tom’s hand and ran, with Tanya behind us. We ran down the street.
“It was just a stray shell, stay where you are!” The commander yelled. We ran behind a building down the street and stayed there, Tanya soon caught up with us. I looked back, with Tom’s hand in mine. George was behind us, but I couldn’t see his parents or grandma.

“Shoot the cowards!” The commander yelled, raising his pistol. The other soldiers raised their guns at us.

I looked down the street, and saw a sight that made my heart jump. Down the other street was the same type of monster tank I saw in the village. The two cannons and two machine guns made me grab Tom and we all ran. We ran through what was left of a backyard and ducked behind a garage. I looked back and saw the monster turning to our street; it let out a barrage of fire that was deafening. We were staring at the behind of this monster. Soon enemy soldiers were coming behind it and running up our street, firing.
“Let’s go!” George yelled, we followed him into the remains of a three story building and sat on the rubble. The building was surprisingly intact. We sat down on the floor to catch our breath.

“Everyone ok?” George said. I looked at Tom and he was breathing hard, but not shaking.

“Tom…you ok man?” George said, putting his hand on his shoulder. Tom nodded and stood up.

“What about your parents?” Tom said.

“They ran down the other side of the street, we gotta go back!” George was almost out the door when Tanya stopped him.

“You’re crazy, that tank will roll you over like paper, not to mention the soldiers.” We stopped when we heard footsteps coming up the stairs. We ran behind a table that was knocked over and George trained his gun at the door.

A man ran in, with a gun in his hand. He was one of ours.

“I thought I saw someone run in here…Don’t shoot!” George put his gun down, noticing it was one of ours.
“There is a column of tanks moving up the street, the rest of my unit was fighting when I ran, I wasn’t going to stay and die!” I looked him up and down really quick. He had that military hair cut, and his hair was brown. He was a little pale and he was average size, like me.

“How do we know you won’t shoot us for traitors?” Tanya asked.

“You think I would shoot all of you for running from a tank? I’m not going to, don’t worry.” He sat down and drank some water from a bottle in his pocket. He was surprisingly calm, for what had just happened.

“The names Johnny, you in the army man?” He pointed at George with his gun and helmet on.

“Recently drafted…” George said with a smirk.

“Did you see any people running down the other side of the street?” George asked.

“Yeah…they got away, but the soldiers were after them…” Johnny took another drink and put it away. George put his head down and looked out the window. Johnny got up and tackled George suddenly.

“Don’t look out, there’s snipers all over the place, I saw two of my guys get taken down earlier.” George got up and crawled away from it, there was only one window in the room.

“Great, we’re gonna die here, I mean, look at us! We have two guns, no water or food; we’re stuck in the middle of an invasion!” Johnny put his hand up and stopped George.

“There’s a command post a few streets down…we’ll be ok there, we just need to make it.” Johnny said. I couldn’t get over how familiar he looked; I knew I had seen him somewhere. Then I realized who he was.

“Que?” I said to Johnny, everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

“Que? I haven’t heard that in forever…” Johnny said. We always said that in junior high, it was our answer to everything to mess with people, and I knew I had seen him somewhere.

“What class?” Johnny asked me.

“Second…almost transferred to third.” He smiled at me.

“I was third, I didn’t even recognize you!” Tom got a little frustrated.

“What the fuck is going on?” He asked.

“Johnny here was in the third class to graduate after me, before I met any of you…” Johnny smiled at Tom, but stopped when he noticed Tom’s obvious frustration.

“Well then, no use standing around…let’s get going.” Johnny said, walking down the stairs, gun in hand. Tanya and George were behind him and I and Tom followed.

When we got to the bottom floor, Johnny stopped us.

“Ok…see that building next to this one? That door over there?” He pointed to a door that was blown open about 8 feet in front of us.

“I’ll run first, then you guys follow, as one big group, if we go one after the other, it gives snipers a chance to wait for one of us to run….” He said. I couldn’t help but think how I had even remembered him. He bolted and I ran behind him, followed by Tom, Tanya, and then George, I heard a shot behind me and I fell to the floor.

“Oops, sorry…guess I squeezed the trigger…” George said.

“Way to go…” Tanya said.

“Everyone ok?” Johnny said.

“I’m fine…” Tom said.

“I’m ok…” I said, getting up. Lucky for us, the next couple of houses were connected. The one thing that was scary was the fact that they were all empty, I could hear gun shots and explosions off in the distance, but the houses were eerily empty. We got to the end of the street and we stopped.

“Ok…let’s see what’s going on here…” Johnny said, pulling out some binoculars. He looked out a hole in the wall and looked at a bunker in the middle of the street.

“Everything looks good, I see our guys in the trenches…” He stopped and jumped when something came out of a closet next to him. We all jumped and backed off.

“Well hey there little guy…” Johnny said, petting a black Labrador dog. Johnny was so soft and nice, he caught my eye. I did like him way back when…but I avoided those thoughts as best I could.

We ran to the bunker; with the dog with us. Johnny said it was safe as long as we moved fast. We walked in, it was chaos, and people were running around left and right. A radio operator was in the corner, but I couldn’t hear the messages.

“Private reporting sir!” He said, saluting a short, small man with a grey hair.

“You’re from the 355th…report?”

“We….We… couldn’t hold out sir! They sent me back as a runner sir! I found survivors sir!” The man looked us up and down.

“Nice to see someone survived this frozen hell…Get some sleep Private, we move to a new location tomorrow, Dismissed!” Johnny saluted.

“Get your friends here some water and a place to sleep, they will be moving with us from now on…” he stepped closer to Johnny… “Might be a good idea to train them in using that gun there too…” He said, pointing at George. The man walked off to a room in the back. We looked at Johnny, who led us to the trenches.

Men were around, with their heads on crates. He lead us to a room, full of crates, it had two separate little ones in the back. The dog ran in behind me and I petted it.

“No beds…use the extra helmets, their crude, but they protect your head from the crap on the ground.” Johnny said. Tom and Tanya grabbed one, while me and George decided we would do better off. I sat next to Tom, who lay down and fell asleep fast.

“Goodnight David…” He said before he knocked out. He mouth “I love you” to me to avoid the other soldiers from hearing. I mouthed it back and Tanya and George lay down on some crates and closed their eyes. Johnny and I walked to the back room with the dog. The dog lay down and I laid my head on its stomach, it didn’t seem to mind. Johnny sat down next to me, took his helmet off and gave me a swig of water.

“So how long have you and that guy been together?” He asked suddenly. I didn’t answer, I just stared shocked.

“I see the way you two look at each other, the way you both look out for each other while on the way over here…” He took a drink.

“Don’t worry, I don’t care, it doesn’t bother me…”

“About a year…” I said quietly. He smiled and simply said. “Cool.” For the next while, we talked and reminisced about the past, all the while the sun went down and the bunker was illuminated occasionally by a flash from a bomb. It felt nice to talk to him.

“Ok…I’m going to get a few hours rest before tomorrow…it’s going to be a long day…” He said. He lay down and put his helmet on his face. I felt all those feelings I had for him all that time ago beginning to come back…

I walked past a few soldiers who were smoking and chatting, and walked to Tom. I lay down next to him, which woke him up.

“Sorry Tom…” He smiled.

“It’s ok…” I pulled him behind the crates and I gave him a big long kiss, losing my tongue in his mouth.
“What was that for?” He asked, smiling.

“I love you…” I whispered. The dog got up and ran to me and Tom and licked my fingers. I was going to focus on Tom as much as I could, to focus on surviving the frozen hell that had been brought upon us. The dog lay down and again I put my head on its stomach. Tom lay down next to me.

“What are you getting in two days for Christmas?” He asked.

“You’ll see…” I said smiling. I gave him another kiss and he smiled and closed his eyes. I turned around to stare at the door to the bunker, and I fell asleep staring at the night sky, with the flashes from bombs moving in it like fish in water.
