Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

That guy from Queen . Nobody liked him much before .

You're kidding, right? There would have been no Queen if it hadn't been for "that guy". And if 'dead' makes a singer popular, explain Justin Bieber.

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

Wikipedia
"The extent to which Mercury's death may have enhanced Queen's popularity is not clear. In the United States, where Queen's popularity had lagged in the 1980s, sales of Queen albums went up dramatically in 1992, the year following his death.[93] In 1992 one American critic noted, "What cynics call the 'dead star' factor had come into play—Queen is in the middle of a major resurgence"."

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

some other 70s bands / personalities were a lot bigger in terms of sales and tv time and have completely vanished . In the 80s they were nowhere .

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

Love the Carpenters saw them in person in concert years ago at the Missouri State Fair.

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

Yeah I know. I've literally read that same comment in a bunch of different places, like Yahoo Answers.

But is there any particularly reason why you, as a gay man, enjoy them?

Pick a song from the poll or specify which one you like in a comment.

all of them! but Sing reminds me of when I was kid so have to go with that one. Just bought their hits CD last week, haven't taken it out of my car cd player yet. great driving music.

I love all the songs by the Carpenters. Such a tragedy about Karen Carpenter. Taken too soon by anorexia.

Love them ALL. Still remember seeing them in person at the Missouri State Fair back in 1970's.

Ohhhh nice thread. I have ALLL the albums and even some bootleg concert recordings of them. Can't get enough of Carpenters. I think my favourite song is Karen's favourite which happens to be I Need To Be In Love from the 'A Kind of Hush' album. :) Love to see Carpenters fans. :)

One of my favorite singer of all time, and Rolling Stone mag also listed her as one of the top 100 singers of all time as well. Madonna said she is "completely influenced by her harmonic sensibility" and all you have to do is listen to "Used To Be My Playground" which could have been a Carpenter song. Very under appreciated as a singer, and she was always pitch perfect, and had an element of sadness naturally in her voice. "Now & Then" was one of the first albums I bought with my own money. Favorite track is probably her cover of "Tryin" To Get The Feeling Again" with "Ava Maria" a close second. She worked with Phil Spector, and the album was released after her death. Worth checking out.

It's a shame that Richard Carpenter doesn't write songs and perform anymore. I remember he recorded an album with Dusty Springfield after Karen died. It was a nice album. Check it out.

His musical arrangements and her singing were a great harmonious combination. Such a tragedy!

If I had to select just ONE of my
favorite song from Carpenters,...it would be:

Touch Me When We're Dancing

and all of the songs listed on their
"Made In America" -- Album.

All-time favorite Carpenters song: Goodbye To Love

Runners-up: Superstar and Merry Christmas Darling

Aww, the poll is closed. I would have been the only one to vote for Rainy Days and Mondays.

I have seen 2 different tribute bands of The Carpenters and they were both great. If you close your eyes while listening to both of these tribute bands It sounds just like the real Carpenters.

I never got the chance to see Richard and Karen Carpenter perform live.

I read the book, "Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter." It was an interesting and sad book to read. According to the book her Mother had an effect on her criticizing her weight, which drove her to be anorexic. Such a tragedy! Gone too soon!

The vocals and the harmonies of Karen and Richard Carpenter is why I like the Carpenters.
