Favorite Gay Films?

The only ones I've seen that I can think of is Brokeback Mountain and Shelter. I personally didn't like Latter Days and thought it was kinda cheesy and poorly acted. I can't wait to see "The Kids are All Right", however

Count me as another who didn't like Brokeback Mountain. Beautifully filmed, beautiful acting, dreadful story. Slightly less depressing than Requiem for a Dream, but not by much.

I liked Shelter, but wouldn't call it a favorite.

I saw Patrik, Age 1.5 recently and thought it was very good; but like I say, anything where the gays aren't prostitutes, closet cases, drug addicts, AIDS victims, or suicidal, gets an automatic B+ from me.

Those Donald Strachey films are decent. I've got a bunch of gay-themed flicks in my Netflix queue right now that seem like they might be okay, but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Recently I saw the film Contracorriente (Undertow). It was Peru's submission as Best Foreign Language Film. Unfortunately it did not receive a nomination which will lead to limited release here in the US but might be on DVD already.

"Miguel is a handsome, young and beloved fisherman in Cabo Blanco, a small fishing village in the Northern coast of Peru, where the community has deep-rooted religious traditions. He is married to the beautiful Mariela, who is 7-months pregnant with their firstborn, but Miguel harbors a scandalous secret: He is having a love affair with another man, Santiago, a painter who is ostracized by the townsfolk for being agnostic and open about his sexuality. Tragedy strikes, Miguel is forced to deal with the consequences of his acts and to come to terms with who he really is, even if by doing so he stands the chance of losing the people he loves the most."

With sweeping images of the beautiful Peruvian coastline, UNDERTOW (Contracorriente) is the emotional intersection of contemporary sexuality, confronted by tradition and belief.

“In a confident yet relaxed feature debut, Fuentes-León has created a wholly unified work of art.” Kevin Thomas , Los Angeles Times

“Undertow, for all its narrative tricks, has been given the rhythm and texture of real life, as well as emotional undercurrents that are haunting.” Bob Mondello, NPR

“Sensual and romantic with a heavy dose of the supernatural and populated by indelible characters.” Pam Grady, Box-office Magazine

* honorable mention Brokeback Mountain & Coming Out

Recently I saw the film Contracorriente (Undertow). It was Peru's submission as Best Foreign Language Film. Unfortunately it did not receive a nomination which will lead to limited release here in the US but might be on DVD already.

Undertow was a nice surprise and was so sad when Peru didn't make the top 5. :grrr:

. . .
The Boys in the Band (For historical purposes only.)

I love Boys in the Band and don't feel the need to qualify with a context why. I am not slamming you Zaphod; I understand why people feel the need to add the context. I think the film is great.

But here's my list:

Brokeback Mountain
Priscilla
Milk
Longtime Companion
Boys in the Band
Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Crying Game

As you can guess, I like gay films from studios as they tend not to have that let's-make-a-movie feel to them.

My recent favorite gay film is "The War Boys".

This is my original fanvid. ^^

OMG that movie had such a sad ending!
I did however find the dads reaction to his sons gayness a little sweet. And the brother and sister had a sweet moment to.

Mine are
1.Shelter (Naturally)
2. The Trip
3. Eating Out
4. The curiousity of Chance
5. Make the Yuletide gay
6. Big gay musical
7.Another gay movie
8.All the Donald Strachey movies
And the War boys of course!

i didn't really like mysterious skin, except for jeff licon, who i loved in it.

i've only watched a few so far, but i enjoyed creatures from the pink lagoon, it was basically a remake of night of the living dead, except all the characters in the movie are gay (including the zombies). it's campyness made me chuckle :p

i also liked the big gay musical, despite it being the most cliche'd story of all time.

I know, right? I used to watch gay movies on IFC every once in a while, and I think the only one I saw where the main character didn't kill himself/OD/die in some horrible accident was "The Sum of Us." And the whole hustler scene is way over-done. I mean, if you're going to make gay films, why not show the positives instead of showing only the negatives?? It's no wonder so many people think we are all AIDS-ridden, suicidal drug addicts! :grrr::grrr::grrr:

^^ this. for me, so many of them revolve around some sort of brutal rape or prostitution. im sick of seeing a guy get violently raped in a lot of these movies, and i've already started to avoid a lot of them in my short viewing experience with em.

i just finished watching another called The Bubble. it's about this palestinian man who meets an israeli, and they fall in love. the palestinian is closeted too.

it's one of the sadest movie's i've ever watched. but it was REALLY good i thought.

I just got a Euro (German or Italian) DVD for the movie Something For Everyone, made back in the 1970s, and it can only be watched on a code-free DVD player, but it is worth it. Michael York is very attractive as the main character, and he is the one with "something for everyone", making him somewhat polymorphous perverse but also very interesting. I also like Derek Jarman's Sebastiane. The original version of Flesh Gordon had explicit gay scenes (which I saw in a theater in San Francisco) that were not kept for the DVD, unfortunately. I think they are lost forever.
