This is like an impossible question for me, since I like so much, but as of now, I've been listening to "Thirty-Three" by the Smashing Pumpkins a lot.. it's maybe not so depressing, but reminiscent and introspective.. shoegazing sort of thing..

My favorite sad song is from the 80's, "When the Children Cry" by White Lion. Favorite romantic song is "Wait" by the same group, I used to listen to those songs so many time when I was young.

Candle in the wind - Sir Elton
Rest in Peace Princess Di:cry:

But if I remember rightly it was first sung for Marilyn Monroe. I found it a little improper that he used the same song for Lady Di after she died. The song belonged to Marilyn Monroe and not to her.

For me it's definitely "The Book Of Love" by Peter Gabriel:

I don't think there's a music video to this song, so I just took this one. Don't care about the video. Just listen to the music.

Re: Candle in the wind (Goodbye Norma Jean), Candle in the wind (Englands Rose)

In 1973 Elton John and Bernie Taupin composed words and music for a song in tribute to Marilyn Monroe. They used Marilyn's real name, Norma Jean, telling the harsh truth about her life: how the people around her exploited her and forced her to become someone she wasn't. Elton and Taupin admire Marilyn for trying to keep her self respect, painful as it was, while playing the role of a Hollywood superstar. The media is criticized openly for hounding her, even after her death. Full blame is put on the press for creating the sex symbol that Marilyn had become. The emphasis of the narration is that of an anonymous admirer, who never really knew her, but was aware that there must have been more to her than what the public was allowed to see.
When Elton John was asked to sing at Princess Diana's funeral service, he chose to sing "Candle In The Wind". This had been one of Diana's favorite songs. He could not sing the words that had been written for Marilyn Monroe, under very different circumstances. For one, Elton John had known Diana personally. In fact, at the funeral of the fashion designer, Versace, when E.J. broke down, Diana, who was sitting next to him, hugged him to comfort him. There is a more personal tone in the new version. He is singing not just for Diana and himself, but for all of England (and the world). The words of the song for Diana are much softer than those in the original version. He calls her "England's Rose", and speaks of how compassionate she was and ready to comfort others. He uses words that transform her into the legend that she will become: may you ever grow in our hearts, the stars spell out your name, our nation's golden child. The press is never mentioned.

One of my favorites is "Sun Comes up, its Tuesday Morning" by the Cowboy Junkies.

Its a really good sit down and cry after a breakup song.

Currently..Nada Sou sou by an Okinawan artist. Its so sad..Its about a girl looking thru an album at pics of her departed brother and asking him to look down on her and that she looks forward to joining him.
It hurts so bad...in my throat...

At the moment, Dareka No Negai Ga Kanau Koro (When Someone's Wish Comes True) by Utada Hikaru.
It sounds like an uplifting song, but it's really about how not everyone in the world can be happy. I'd look for a vid to post, but I don't think anyone else would care to see it since it's sung in Japanese.

@ VICTORIADON: Thanks for the explanation about "Candle in the wind". I wasn't aware of the story behind the song. I just knew the "new" version and thought it was nearly identical to the original.

"Pyramid Song" by Radiohead is haunting. It can make me seriously cry if I'm feeling depressed.
