Favourite Folklore/Mythological Figure?

Sasquatch. So many 'sightings' and not a single piece of evidence to prove its existence.

I'm surprised no one has said The Loch Ness monster. That's a story we hear from wee lads.

And no God?

Did you feel it with the same hand that was in the water, or the other hand? ;)

folklore in my county in Ohio tells the tail of Gore orphanage. It's a real orphanage that burnt down and children died. It says the site is haunted by the ghost of the children.

If you'd like to read about it. There's a lot of folks that claim they've heard and seem things there, including one of my cousins

The town I grew up in, Brighton, Ontario, had a haunted house: Proctor house.

William Proctor was one of the wealthiest people in Brighton and owned a shipping business which carried goods from Brighton Harbour across Lake Ontario to Rochester. Not all of his goods were legal. But, he was a wealthy man with good lawyers. He built his home above on a hill just north of downtown Brighton in the 1860s. He used the widow's walk at the peak to keep an eye on his steamers in the harbour to the south. He could see his ships coming and going.

Anyway, as a side business, Proctor was also a money lender, and he made a loan to a man named Nix who lived about a 10-minute walk south of where I grew up. Shortly after the loan was completed, Nix took ill and died soon after. After the funeral, his family packed up their belongings and moved out of town. With no payments being made, Proctor hoped to secure the family belongings which Nix had put up as collateral, but, since they disappeared, he dug up the body and held it for ransom. This is where the story splits. Proctor either sold the body to the hospital for research or the family paid off the debt to get Nix's body back.

Either way, reports of balls of fire floating around the house suddenly popped up among the neighbours. Some witnesses reported seeing the fire balls in the widow's walk. It's called Proctor's Ghost, but it was really the ghost of Nix who was supposedly haunting Proctor for stealing his body.

I never saw the 'ghost', but the house scared the hell out of me. I had to deliver groceries there one time and I couldn't get out of the place fast enough.

Today, it is a living museum and still advertised as a haunted house. Paranormal research groups have even stayed there to study it.

Boo!

In North Carolina we have Lydia, a girl who was said to have been killed in a car wreck near a bridge on US Hwy 70 in the central part of the state. It is said that if you drive in the area at night, you might see her ghost trying to hitch a ride. The vanishing female hitchhiker is common folklore in many areas.

Didn't William Proctor have a daughter named Sarah, who was attacked by a ghost in the house? I understand that her body swelled up and a message appeared on the ceiling saying "You are mine to kill Sarah Proctor." Perhaps I have it mixed up with another story.

Merlin, by far! I like the idea of living backward, from aged to young, and knowing what you should have, before you did. ..| :slap:

I have never heard that story. Nor have I ever heard of Sarah Proctor, and I can't find anything about it online. If that had been a story floating around Brighton, I would have heard about it, but, as far as I know, nobody was ever attacked in Proctor House. If the story does exist, it didn't involve the haunted house in Brighton.

Trolls, Gnomes and Elves

I collect the Norwegian Nyform Trolls....

I am totally torn on this one.

I have so many that it is paralysis by choice. Some faves though...

Prometheus

Prometheus is the only Titan to side with Zeus against Cronus. He repeatedly defies the gods by helping humans, most notably by bringing them fire from Olympus. Though Zeus devises a cruel torture for him, chaining him to a rock where every day an eagle comes to pick at his innards, Prometheus never surrenders.

Odysseus

Odysseus is the protagonist of Homer's Odyssey. He is the king of Ithaca and a great warrior in the Trojan War but is best known for his decade-long trip home from the war. Odysseus survives the challenges he encounters by using his wits. A fine talker and brilliant strategist, he is perhaps the most modern and human of the classical heroes.

The Furies

Also known as the Erinyes, the Furies are three horrible sisters—Tisiphone, Megaera, and Alecto—who torment evildoers and punish them for their sins.

The Sphinx

A beast with the head of a woman and the body of a winged lion. The Sphinx blocks entry to the city of Thebes, refusing to budge until someone answers her riddle and eating anyone who fails. When Oedipus solves the riddle, the Sphinx promptly kills herself.

Brynhild

A Valkyrie who angers Odin and is punished with imprisonment in a ring of fire. She is a dazzling character, with strength both of soul and body. She is the prototype for Wagner's Brunnhilde, the most famous Valkyrie in opera.
