It's for political reasons only in the sense that because of politics and self-righteousness, laws were apparently broken. Having spent time with the sort of people who make up the elephangelical Tea Party cadre, it would not surprise me in the least if they disregarded any law they felt was not in accord with what they pretend is the advancement of "the Kingdom of God".
I would hope that all three politicians involved got to prison for a very long time, but that would just make them martyrs. With religiously delusional people like these, there is no good way to deal with them.
