Hey guys, this is going to sound a little strange and more than a bit yukky, probably... Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has a fear of vomiting? I have had this fear since I was very young. I can't be near anyone who is sick to their stomach and will gladly sit up all night long taking pills or trying other remedies to avoid it myself. Sometimes, I can get myself worked up and so worried about it that I actually become nauseous, and then it becomes a vicious circle that's very hard to break out of... Has anyone else had this, and maybe found a way to overcome it?

Well anyway, sorry for grossing people out! !oops!

Have a great day, guys! :-)

I haven't seen someone vomit in awhile, but I share your discomfort for vomiting yourself. No matter how sick I am, I try to resist the natural instinct to vomit. I don't know, I just hate it; the feeling, the thought of all that acid rising through my esophagus (possibly damaging it).

Don't worry. Your not alone! ^.^

Good to know - although my impression is that many more women suffer from this fear than men... Or maybe us guys are just quieter about stuff like this? Anyway, I hope to someday have rid myself of this fear - without having to go through therapy that claims exposing yourself to your fears is the best cure...

Hi,

Yes absolutely. I have suffered from this fear for the last 12 years and it has dominated my life on and off since it began. My fear is not so much of seeing other people vomit, but more of myself doing it.. If someone else does it, my only real fear is that I will catch it. Because of this, it can be very difficult to be around children who always seem to get sick. This is a real phobia and it has a name... Emetophobia.

For a long time, I thought that I was going crazy because I had such an intense fear of throwing up. Then, one day I googled "fear of vomiting" and I found that there were many others like me. I was in therapy for a while and that was somewhat helpful. 40 mg of paxil a day plus a pretty good supply of compazine (just in case) helps to keep the anxiety managable, but it's still always there.
There are many websites with support forums for people with this problem but unfortunately, I am not allowed to post url's yet.

I don'g know if I'd label it a "fear" but I will def avoid doing it if at all possible, even when I know I'd feel better if I did. I'll do almost anything to hold it in or swallow it back down.

I remember watching one of those reality contest shows and the contestants had to eat something disgusting and a couple started puking and I had to turn it off because I got nauseous myself.

Seems like a RELATIVELY common phobia.

I've had it for years too... :( It's one of my biggest phobias and I'm so terrified of it. Yet when it happens naturally I always re-learn how it's really not so bad.

I also, however, when I have any choice at all, fight to keep from vomiting. I've got it down to an art. :(

Even reading this thread is getting to me. I've put people on ignore for posting vomit photos and I was really happy when they removed the "barf smiley" (thanks mods).

It's my personal opinion that one of the factors that contributes to this phobia is how often one throws up as a child. When you think about it, children are the ones who always seem to get stomach viruses etc.... I know that I very rarely threw up as a child.. In fact, I can clearly remember three times that it happened (maybe the fact that I remember so well is also strange).. Perhaps kids that became ill so rarely never learned to see throwing up as a regular part of life when they became adults. I recently had an emergency root canal and was in excrutiating pain.. I would take 10 of those over throwing up even once....

I had stomach bugs when I was young as any young kid does... but I remember even then absolutely hating it. I imagine that's normal, but then it seemed to become a bigger and bigger issue to me over time.

I think there are more factors in addition to not getting sick much as a young child, especially because like I said, I have this fear and I did get sick a normal amount as a kid.

My experience is that after the age of about 4 years old, I never got stomach bugs anymore, and my anxiety around throwing up began around age 11 as my normal generalized anxiety started to ramp up. It only got worse from there, and was slightly alleviated when I was food poisoned a few years ago and realized it wasn't so bad, and then again this past summer when I got ill from drinking and smoking weed in the same night. In both cases I was lucky though, as it was over very quickly, and I still have this fear deeply implanted within me. Sigh...

Dr. Angela L. Davidson et al. conducted an experiment where it was concluded through various surveys that people suffering from emetophobia are more likely to have an internal locus of control pertaining to their everyday life as well as health related matters. [2] A locus of control is an individual’s perception of where control comes from. Having an internal locus of control means that an individual perceives that they have their own control over a situation whereas an external locus of control means that an individual perceives that some things are out of their control. She explains how this phobia is created through the locus of control by stating, “Thus far, it seems reasonable to stipulate that individuals with a vomiting phobia deem events as being within their control and may therefore find it difficult to relinquish this control during the act of vomiting, thus inducing a phobia.” [2]

In an internet survey conducted by Dr. Joshua D. Lipsitz et al. given to emetophobic people, respondents gave many different reasons as to why they became emetophobic. Among some of the causes listed were severe bouts of vomiting as children and being firsthand witnesses to severe vomiting in others due to illness, pregnancy, or alcoholism. [1]

Alternatively, there may be no identifiable cause of emetophobia.

Yeah I used to think of it as unnecessary/bad for you, but really, it's your body doing a natural thing to rid itself of something and make you better. :)

I can count the number of times I have vomited on one hand. I hate it. It's violent. It hurts. It's exhausting. It leaves a terrible taste ans usually involves having one's head in a toilet. Frankly, I'd rather have it come out the other end.

I actually 'like' the vomiting, because it directly proceeds the feeling of relief.
When i get nauseous I will intentionally make myself vomit, without waiting for the feeling to fully buildup.

However, one should avoid vomiting when they suspect their 'vomit' is going to be highly acidic.

I will usually try to neutralize it by drinking a lot of water, or glass of water with some baking soda. Saves me sore throat and damaged voice cords :)
