February is Hero History Month

Do you know who this is?

Her name is Jane Elliott, and she is a real hero!
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in 1968, Jane Elliott was a 3rd grade teacher who came up with a novel way to teacher her students what discrimination feels like.

The class was divided by eye color, blue eyes versus brown eyes. Day one, blue eyed people were superior. Day Two, brown eyed people were superior.
The result was the 1970 documentary, "The Eye of the Storm", which later morphed into a lifelong examination of how we treat each other.

Of Black America, is a series of seven, one hour documentaries, presented by CBS News in the summer of 1968.

So far I've found two episodes from the series on YouTube. The one below is very "flat & dry", in the style of CBS News during the Walter Cronkite era.

The other features Bill Cosby, which I'm hesitant to post given his change in circumstances.

Of Black America is memorable because of "the face" - anyone who saw this series in '68 will never forget, 'the face".

I would say that I am not sure why people try to co-opt Black History Month with other awareness campaigns.

I get the overlap that there are a lot of black heroes too...but I am happy to take this month to reflect on the unique struggles and great accomplishments of black people around the world.

I debated doing this for the reasons you mentioned.

But Jane is white and she made an impact by saying things in public that would have gotten me shot.

Mike Jones, the escort who outed pastor Ted Haggard.

In November 2006, male prostitute and masseur Mike Jones alleged that Haggard had paid him for sex over a three-year period and had also purchased and used crystal methamphetamine. Jones said he had only recently learned of Haggard's true identity, and explained his reasons for coming forward by saying, "It made me angry that here's someone preaching against gay marriage and going behind the scenes having gay sex." Jones made the allegations public in response to Haggard's political support for a Colorado Amendment 43 on the November 7, 2006, Colorado ballot that would ban same-sex marriage in that state. Jones told ABC News, "I had to expose the hypocrisy. He is in the position of influence of millions of followers, and he's preaching against gay marriage. But behind everybody's back [he's] doing what he's preached against.

I didn't know that was Officer Eugene Goodman!
