Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

I couldn't fucking even.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

To be fair it's a terrible song and almost impossible to sing without going overboard into high camp, i much preferred it to a straight dull version.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

This is worse. Sorry for the potato quality.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

a slutty version of this song fits right in with the current trash we have in the White House ;)

she quit the Black Eyes Peas for this:lol:

Shhhh! There are a few GOPs lurking around here who will liken this post to high treason. You might as well be a member of Isis in their eyes.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

I feel like this was just a new way to take the knee during the anthem Fuck it up so bad everyone just laughs throughout.

I'm all onboard on this one. Never thought much about her other than that her (now former) husband was hot. Totally inappropriate (to use that way over-used word). Crazily inappropriate and I loved it, much for that reason. Think what she could do with "God Save the Queen". Seriously.

Maybe the best part is that she doesn't have a fucking clue as to how bizarre and crazy this interpretation is. Some of these people are so jaw-droppingly stupid you can't believe it.

I was astounded and puzzled at her smugness like she just knew she was slaying.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

Oh, thank Fuck, I thought I had fallen in a time warp...

Anyway, why do people always complain as if the performance did not have to be controversial or even totally fucked up? 8-)

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

...ahh...she apologized now....

...so maybe she should go back and do it again....get back on the horse Fergie..|

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

What's worse, Fergie singing the National Anthem or Mariah Carey's 2017 NYE "performance"?

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

There's a dichotomy at play here. For as long as I can remember, the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner was considered "something we gotta do" at the beginning of a sporting event. It was something of a patriotic obligation, so we had somebody sing it. That somebody, at most sporting event, was just somebody who could sing it reliably. (It's got a pretty wide range for a national anthem.) If memory serves, at the National League baseball games I went to, they played an instrumental recording of the song, and we were encouraged to sing it ourselves.

But at some point, especially for big televised games, they realized this could be a "draw". They could get a famous person to sing it. So in came the pop singers and country singers and what not. And...well, it was fine, but more than a bit unnecessary. They all sang it ably and "respectfully" (back then) but none sang it memorably. What was the point of getting an A-list singer to do nothing more than perform a patriotic obligation in an unremarkable fashion?

Then along came Whitney Houston.

She gave her performance of the national anthem just enough Whitneyisms that people went apeshit for it. Arista released it as a single - and it made the top forty, for God's sake. So there was the signpost - make it memorable.

Then along came Roseanne Barr.

Come on. They HAD to know they were going to get a comedic performance. And she delivered just that. And people loathed it. It was "disrespectful", "unpatriotic". So here was another post - "make it memorable...but respectable".

And, for the most part, that's what we've gotten the last quarter century. Singers adding just enough vocalisms that folks feel that this person indeed was a great choice to sing the national anthem...but not enough that they "ruin" the song.

Fergie is the second artist I can recall to come under fire for her performance in the past twenty-five years. Christina Aguilera forgot the words...which some people oddly defended (even here on JUB) because she "put on an incredible performance". And now Fergie. I think there were actually two problems here. One - she really doesn't have the range and vocal chops to sing the song. And two - the arrangement (possibly chosen to cover for the first problem) was so overblown and messy that it violated the Roseanne Barr axiom - "thou shalt be respectful of the song".

Personally, I find the whole thing silly. I'd be fine going back to the instrumental tape and having the crowd sing along. But that won't bring in the ad dollars or generate rage tweets, so here we are.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

My honey and I were cringing as we listened to it on TV.

It's a straight-forward song. Just sing it as is and be done with it. Stop butchering it.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

(It's got a pretty wide range for a national anthem.)

The Star Spangled Banner has a range of 1 1/2 octaves. The average untrained human vocal range, when pushed, is only about 2 octaves, so it's a strain for less than half of the population to go from the B-flat beneath middle C on 'stripes' to the high F above C on 'free'.

Even a very popular singer everybody knows has a range of less than 2 1/2 octaves.

Re: Fergie Fucked It Up? Yes or No?

Doesn't "O Canada" have a range of about six notes?
