Final surviving great-grandchild of Queen Victoria dies age 95

Prince Carl Johan Bernadotte of Sweden, Count of Wisborg, was a member of the Swedish Royal family. He was descended from Victoria through his British mother, Princess Margaret of Connaught, who became Crown Princess of Sweden on her marriage to his father the Crown Prince (future King) Gustav VI Adolf.

He actually died back in May o) but I was aware he was the last one, I just missed hearing about his death. You may have guessed by now that I'm interested in European royal genealogy.

In case I haven't sent to you all to sleep yet, did you know....

....that Queen Victoria descendants include five current reigning monarchs and would include yet another five from deposed/defunct monarchies?

It all came about because her daughters/granddaughters/great-granddaughters would often marry strategically into other European houses. I have dubbed it the 'Game of Thrones'. They were all related. They sometimes married their first-cousins. Victoria and Albert themselves were first-cousins. And so by the time you get to a few generations down it's all over the place.



The five monarchs descended from Victoria (all great-great-grandchildren) are:

Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom
King Harald V of Norway
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden
Queen Margarethe II of Denmark
King Juan Carlos I of Spain

The five former reigning monarchs descended from her are:

Germany (ended after WWI and defeat of Kaiser Wilhelm II)
Russia (ended after Revolution and death of Romanov family of Tsar Nicholas II)
Yugoslavia (ended after WWII with deposing of Peter II)
Romania (ended after WWII with deposing of Michael I)
Greece (ended in 1970s with deposing of Constantine II)

Also any number of German ducal houses such as Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Leiningen, the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Kassel, the Dukes of Hanover and Dukes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (would have been Victoria but had to go through the male line to one of her sons)

Also descended for her is Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (he was a member of the Greek Royal Family) and is Elizabeth II's third-cousin. P.S. He isn't Greek at all - that entire family are actually Danish, they gave the throne to a son of King Christian IX.

It's the same story with him, King Christian IX of Denmark. His reigning descendants are of Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, and formerly Greece and Romania.

I was indeed, it would have been their young haemophiliac son the Tsarevich, had he survived to become Tsar, that would have been the descendant. Or even the dubious pretenders, were they truthful, who claimed to be their daughter Anastasia.

She converted to that religion but she was British, a member of the Mountbatten family (the anglicised form of their original German name, von Battenberg)

It's the same story with him, King Christian IX of Denmark. His reigning descendants are of Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, and formerly Greece and Romania.

His descendants also included the aforementioned Tsar of Russia, and will also include Spain, but not through Juan Carlos I, but through his 'Greek' (i.e. patrilinearly Danish) wife, and their son and heir Felipe, Prince of Asturias.

I saw on Antiques Roadshow some of the relics of the British ship sent to St Petersburg to help some of them.

Wiki says British ships were sent to the Crimea in 1918(?) to rescue "Nicholas's mother (George's aunt) Maria Feodorovna (Dagmar of Denmark) and other members of the extended Russian imperial family".

That's an interesting perspective, ChickenGuy--the other side of the coin, as it were.

The Russians don't look at it exactly the same way. When researchers found the Tsar's bones, scientists rushed to do the DNA to positively identify the bones as the Tsar's. They could only do mitochondrial DNA, which required the cooperation of a Russian relative, who refused. He still, after all those decades, held bad feelings for what he beliveed that the Brits had done to the Tsar.

They ended up going to someone else for the DNA.

As a side note, Queen Mary cheated the Tzarina out of some crown jewels, thus Tzarina Alexandra gave many remaining jewels to her sister-in-law, Grand Duchess Olga Romanov to smuggle out of the country. Olga barely escaped the execution and, after her second marriage in Kiev to Nikolai Kulikovsky, was eventually given sanctuary here in Canada. Her and her husband were given a farm in Campbellville, ON but had a hard time making a go of it, so moved to Cooksville (now Mississauga). They lived in Cooksville for many years and slowly descended into poverty. Rumour has it that she burried the remaining crown jewels somewhere on the property in Cooksville, thus sparking secret midnight visits from many European Crowns to return the jewels, all to no avail. Apparently the visits were so frequent that the village of Cooksville had to raise funds to pave the road on which Olga lived.

Olga was also a rather accomplished painter and spent many years painting local landscapes and giving them out to her neighbours, of whom she became very close with. Believe it or not, even now, after many years after Olga's death, the odd painting of her's still show up in a local garage sale, the owners obviously not knowing it's origins. Olga's house is just down the street from where I live.

Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna died penniless in a roominghouse in down town Toronto in 1960, a true riches to rags tragedy.

CG is correct re Victoria, in that the current pretender to the Russian throne, Maria Vladimirovna, is descended from Queen Victoria through her paternal grandmother, Victoria Melita, the daughter of Victoria's second son, Alfred, and who was married to Nicholas II's first cousin, Cyril. I didn't know any of this, but I have an abiding interest in history and folly, and three minutes worth of Wikepedia articles verified CG's post.
Maria Vladmirovna's claim is not undisputed, but she has more support than her rival, most importantly from the Orthodox church.
