I am planning on moving to the Los Angeles area soon after I graduate college. I'll have a degree and everything so I should have what it takes to make a living out there..hopefully!

My question is where should I live?! I was thinking about Santa Monica or the West Hollywood area. Is it pretty easy to meet other gays out there? I'm attending a small university in a small town so opportunities to meet fellow gays hasn't been the easiest so I haven't had that a lot of experience in that department.

Thanks for any suggestions.
 
Well I do know about Southern California because I'm from Southern California.

You may be getting confused about Santa Monica Boulevard & the city of Santa Monica. Santa Monica Boulevard is a major thoroughfare that goes from East side of Los Angeles, through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, & West Los Angeles, before ending in Santa Monica at the beach.

In West Hollywood, most of the gay bars & gay nightlife is located on Santa Monica Boulevard between Fairfax Avenue on the east and Robertson Blvd. on the west.

If you've heard gay people referring to "Santa Monica" they may have been talking about Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, not the city of Santa Monica.

Santa Monica is a city close to the beach on the Westside of Los Angeles. It's mostly straight people, with straight bars & straight nightlife. However, it's very liberal, so finding people who are accepting of gay people shouldn't be a problem in Santa Monica or anywhere on L.A.'s Westside.

West Hollywood is the traditional "gayborhood" of Los Angeles. It's very gay, but it's becoming more & more expensive.

Yes, there are TONS of gay men in Los Angeles, particularly in West Hollywood. HOWEVER, the gay men that live in Los Angeles -- particularly West Hollywood -- are some of the most shallow, and narcissistic gay men you will ever meet in your life. I'm totally serious. Most of the gay guys who live in West Hollywood are aspiring actors, screenwriters, singers/artists, or are "trust fund babies" who are living the life off their parents' money.

To be accepted as a popular gay man in West Hollywood, you have to get your hair done at an expensive trendy salon, wear clothes from Fred Segal & other namebrand boutiques on Melrose, lease a new shiny BMW, eat only organic food & be anorexic, appear regularly at happy hour (but never come or leave alone) at the Abbey, Mickey's, etc., and talk about marriage equality in your Gucci sunglasses while you search for the next guy on Grindr, Manhunt, Adam4Adam, or when you're really desperate, Craigslist -- to hook up with that night using poppers. Preferably you should be a White guy with bleached spiked blonde hair, with an orange spray tan from Darque Tan.

If you want to be really popular in West Hollywood, then you might want to think about going into gay porn. Then your face (& along with the rest of your body) will be plastered all over Frontiers, Cybersocket, Odyssey, and all of the other gay magazines that are ubiquitous around town. Most of the go-go dancers in the gay bars in West Hollywood also work in gay porn.

If you're looking to meet gay men of substance, it's probably not going to happen in West Hollywood. I'm sorry. It's like finding a needle in a haystack.

Perhaps a more down to earth, mid-size cities like Portland, Oregon, or Austin, Texas might offer more opportunities to meet sensible, down to earth gay men.
 
Oh Please Jayqueer you live in Orange County which is about as non gay friendly as you can get for So Cal. I lived in WEHO for ten years and there are plenty of nice non shallow guys who live there. In fact the shallow guys generally don't live in WEHO at all, they come in on the weekends from places like OC.

WEHO is like any other place - there are all kinds of people who live there, and there are all kinds of people you can get to know.
 
I live like an hour away from LA, WeHo is a nice place to live, but it is expensive. I rather go out to WeHo to party on the weekends rather than living there.
 
I wish you the best of luck! i did the big move to LA last year, and I had to move back. The economy is so bad now, and it's worse over there. You have to know some people out there before moving. It'll be very hard to get employment if you don't know anybody that could help you. It's an awesome place, but just be prepared. You'll have a lot of fun otherwise. :)
