I've been thinking about what makes a person happy recently. I look around me and I see the majority of people are 'living for the moment.' They deplete the earth of its resources and live a self-centered life.

I think it's a shame and a waste. That lifestyle isn't fulfilling and is unappealing to me. I think you should give back to the world. That leads me to think about the society I live in as an American. It seems to be a society based on acquisition of wealth and less about being a caring person.

I realize other societies are less money hungry but is it practical to separate yourself from society altogether to escape the lust for acquiring things? I don't think so. It seems like, as with most things, you must balance the two in moderation.

If you are successful, which takes a high level of conscious effort and time no doubt, is that what makes a person happy because it means a meaningful life? I'm not sure.

I've been looking for books that address this issue but there are none which directly do so that I've seen. Mostly the ones which seem even close are religious based and I prefer a secular source.

I'm wondering if anyone else has thought about this subject or if anyone has done some reading that might apply? I would like to discuss it
.
