Firearms: What do you have/carry/want?

I have a variety of rifles. My current carry for protection is an Arminius .22/.22mag revolver, which sucks but my proper sidearm was stolen from a guy I loaned it to -- so what I want is a new Ruger SP101 .357 mag with the same custom barrel and trigger and grip.

The Ruger SP101s are great revolvers. I had a Ruger Security Six that I really liked, but I gave it to a friend a few months ago. I don't regret it, but I do miss it.

Carrying a .22 for protection...I've done it too when I didn't have a choice, didn't feel great about it though.

So I assume you're more of a rifle man? I'd like more of those. Any suggestions for a good 30.06 or otherwise good rifle? Mostly for target shooting

We have a lot of guns -- all the way from a .22 pistol to an AK-47...

Currently on my wish list would be an Olympic Arms 1911 -- which makes me wonder if Jackaroe ever stumbled across one of those...

I've NEVER had OR shot a 1911 -- but I delivered to the company up in Olympia, WA a couple years ago -- and that was my FAVORITE GUN they made at the time (just by looks)...

Oh -- and Kuhlindar -- I told opinterph about our conversation regarding the AK-47 -- and he informed me that we ARE NOT rich -- it is NOT a FULL AUTO -- ALTHOUGH, it CAN be converted to one by removing a pin or something -- sorry that I was misinformed during that discussion...

I LOVE two-tone 1911s. I have a Kimber Gold Combat and an Ultra CDP, both two-tone and I love the way they look. That one there looks great too!

Wow, I didn't realize they were that close to me! That's like 20 miles from my house!
I think I may have to pay them a visit?

The CDP you'll be able to Google, but the Gold Combat is a custom gun. So here's a pic of it...

For protection, I pop in the .22 mag cylinder and use unjacketed lead (otherwise, I hate that stuff -- it gets all over!). A deputy I know says that at self-defense range a .22 mag with eight rounds is as good as a .38 with six, and cops got by with .38s for decades.

When I carried the .357, I loaded with .38 special for that very reason: if it was good enough for cops for decades, it's good enough for protection. After all, the point is to stop the threat, not to put blood and innards on the wall behind the bad guy, which is what a "Dirty Harry" item would tend to do.

My favorite target rifle is the .303 Enfield. Canada made shiploads of them for WWII, and most of them are superb. I fell in love with them when a friend let me take one out of his gun store for a field test, and I put a group of five in the bull's eye at my first attempt at fifty yards with open sights. I also like the looks I get when, after shooting, I slap on the bayonet, roll a condom over the muzzle, and stick the bayonet in the ground to hold the weapon, then toss my cap on top before picking up my brass.
I've enjoyed the Enfield at ranges from 20 yards to 200.

If I don't just want to hit them but make things 'blow up', I go with my .300 Win mag toy by Remington. I tried it once for shooting sand castles, but even at 120 yards it was like an anti-tank round against an old VW bug. OTOH, it's absolutely awesome for setting off a charge of tannerite.

BTW, if I had numerous $k, I'd love to have someone make me a 1911 like that, in 10mm.

Failing that, one in .22 mag would be nice.

Nope, never even handled an Olympic Arms weapon. I'll tell you what a good value in a .45 is. A Taurus PT 1911. Custom features galore for about $650 retail!

My buddy had a .300 Win Mag he let me shoot a couple times, great fun but NOT cheap to feed! I guess that can be said for most rifles though.
I like the idea of that Enfield, I think I'll look into that. I like iron sights too, I left my Colt 6920 stock and I think it's perfect as-is. I'm wondering about the availability of the Enfield, hopefully I can get my paws on one.

As for the .22, I agree that a .22WMR is acceptable, though not ideal. I sometimes carry my Kel Tec P32 and I feel just fine with that. I don't think it's necessary to carry a S&W 500, but I just heard recently of a man who put four .22lr into the chest of an attacker and still got beaten. I'd bet if those had been .22WMR, the result would have been different

Ah I don't have a lot of experience with Para-Ordinance, but I know a lot of folks seem to like them. How's the trigger on that one? Last I remember from being interested in them was their LDA, but that was a while ago.

Do you have a pocket holster for the S&W? I'm interested to know which model that is as well


The Kimber conversion kit is what I was considering also, since I have three 5" Kimbers. I'd be interested to hear how it works out for you

The Para has a decent single action. It's not an LDA. No, I don't have a holster for the Smith other than the ankle rig. It's a 340 SC in .357, but I carry 158 gr. +P .38 in it. It doesn't have an external hammer and weighs only 12 oz. You really forget it's in your pocket.

I'd call the .22 mag "tolerable"... barely. Mostly the revolver looks scary, and since nine times out of ten the bad guys retreat or surrender when faced with an armed citizen... well, I've never had to shoot yet, and hopefully won't have to. I'd be thrilled to be able to end my days having never shot anything closer to a human than a snowman.

IIRC, the shock factor from the mag round is about twice that of the LR, so the outcome should definitely have been different. OTOH, if facing someone on drugs, well, there was a guy who got tasered and kept coming, hit by another taser and still kept coming, and got shot three times with a 9mm before being stopped. The odds of encountering someone like that are low, but if I do, and my firepower is insufficient -- well, I made the call on what to carry, so I won't have room to complain (except about the federal government subsidizing a high violent crime rate).

When I took a tactical class a couple of years ago, the instructor emphasized never carrying something you can forget you have.

Don't sweat the Flying Nuns on this site,Jerry who want to wag their finger at the gun owners here..I really could give less than a fuck about what some guy who lives in country where they are banned,tells me about my right to own one here.I don't owe these people any explanation.I like guns,enjoy shooting and I'm allowed to own them.Enough said.

As I said in the other thread,I have an DPMS AR-15 ,a Winchester,30-30 scoped rifle and a Smith and Wesson 9mm.Sigma..It's just a little bulky for a concealed carry..

I suppose I could get a smaller,more streamlined 9mm-but I've been wanting a snubnose for a while and was gonna get one last year,but put it off..

Anyways,I've been talking with another JUBBER who is very familiar with a wide variety of weapons and he recommended a few to me..The other day I decided to get a Ruger SP101 ( .357 magnum) with a 2-1/2 inch barrel..I'll be picking it up next week,just in time for the classes to switch my concealed carry permit over to Utah..

I already ''tried it on'' and it is a lot easier to conceal than the bulky framed 9mm..Although,I will say losing the 17 round capacity is somewhat of a drawback.I had another .357 magnum years ago,and it was just a great handgun. I liked that you can fire .38 rounds out it if you wanted to save a few buck while target shooting..But I decided to go with a shorter barrel this time around..

Anyway yeah, the Sigmas are nice but the Ruger will definitely conceal better.

I wouldn't worry too much about the loss of capacity, but that's me. You're not going to have a FTF or FTE with a revolver, which is a major bonus, IMO.

I have several pocket autos but not much of the revolver variety. I think I might need to get some more of those. I'm thinking a Ruger SP101, some flavor of S&W, and probably a Python, though not for carry

Ah ok, thanks. That looks like a good revolver. I bet .357mag loads are a bit much out of that, but .38 is better for carry anyway, IMO. Gives me another revolver to consider
