I love their reflective little eyes.
A few more pictures of Mom and the kitts. We tried several different soft, cuddly materials for them to cozy up on, but they always went to the cooler floor, so we decided to go for a softer piece of vinyl. they seem to enjoy that and are sleeping on it.
It was suggested to me that we go with the Lord of the Rings theme for naming the kittens. To that end, here they are nursing and napping:

Fiercely protecting her progeny from would be predators.
They are adorable. It's great to finally be able to see them all, after PMing about them for the last 3 weeks. Has it really been that long? They are growing up fast.
Give them a few more weeks, and they'll all be ready to head out from Bag-end through to Rivendell, and on to other adventures, in their quest to find Mordor and banish him and his One Ring to bind them all.

1. Boots just moved her litter from under the couch to behind plants - at her choice due to the extreme heat we've been experiencing. Consequently, Neil and his roommate didn't really have an opportunity to clean behind the plant jungle that has been there for quite awhile. It was an impromptu relocation. Neil did everything he could reasonably try before the babes were born to try and make comfortable accomodations for Boots - she rebuffed his bed efforts in favour of under the couch.
2. There is no bedding, currently, because her majesty, Boots, has declined it in favor of a cooler surface. Neil and his roommate found some scrap linoleum that is clean and softer than the hardwood for Boots and her litter to use.
3. While you are starting with a kitten, Neil started with a wild cat whom he and his roommate befriended and invited into their home - a little different circumstance.
No, the wire is perhaps not ideal. I don't know if he has an option. Again, Boots moved rather suddenly and decisively to where SHE wanted to go. Neil is trying to accomodate her as best he can.
Oh, yeah, if you're not familiar, Neil has a degenerative spinal condition and can't do things you or I might be able to do quickly.
I hope you're enjoying your cool Pacific breezes - we've been seeing 33C in these parts, which is exceptionally hot.

My whole apartment is second-hand. The only 'new' piece of furniture in it is my bed, and that's 7 years old. The building is ancient, built in the late 1800s. I do what I can to keep it clean.
Water is free, but cleaning an old apartment like this isn't easy when you're barely able to use a vacuum or a mop because of your health, which brings me to your second post.
That is not a "shitload of gunk". That is what comes from growing plants in the same place for 8 years and suddenly having to move them all in just a few minutes for Boots and her family to set up home. There was no time to clean anything until after they were all settled and we were able to sweep up as best we could.
The extension cord you mentioned is attached to a box fan in the window. The cord was moved yesterday. The blue blanket, which I used as insulation during winter so I didn't have to walk on a freezing floor (remember, this place was built before insulation was invented and there is nothing between me and the cold basement except the floor) is now gone as well.
If I'd known the cats were going to set up home back there, I would have taken my time to clean it properly before they moved in.
Seriously, you have no idea what I went through yesterday and how much I'm paying for it today. What you are pointing out is the 'before', when we'd barely had time to make room for the family to move in. This next picture, which I took about 2 minutes ago, is the 'after'. The floor is still dirty from the plants and water and such, but I can barely move right now and it's just going to have to wait until I can wash it. Right now, I'm not in any shape to even sweep it again.

Wow. Just wow. Neil posts pictures and tells the wonderful story of taking in Boots and now is happy to show off her and the family, and here are complaints regarding the cleanliness of the space they are in?? I can understand some of the concern, but seriously, what do you think cats in the WILD do when it's time for birth, hire a cleaning crew for under the porch or wherever they've picked?
I think it's wonderful he's taken the time to welcome Boots into his home, and to share the joy that she and her litter have brought. I didn't even pay any attention to the surroundings, I was so enamored with all the cuteness there.
