Here in Ontario, the punishments for first- and second-time DUI offences are rather strict:

The minimum penalty for a first offence is:

- Suspension of your driving privileges for one year
- A fine of no less than $1,000
- Participation in the "Back on Track" counselling program, at your own cost
- Installation of an Ignition Interlock system / alcohol screening device in your vehicle for one year (at your own cost)

The minimum penalty for a second offence is:

- Driver's licence suspension for three years (if the previous conviction was within 10 years)
- Mandatory jail term of 30 days (minimum)
- Participation in the "Back on Track" counselling program, at your own cost
- Installation of an Ignition Interlock system/alcohol screening device in your vehicle for three years (at your own cost)

What are the DUI penalties where you live?

The penalties are suspension and fine, but normally get worked down to probation, especially for those under 21. Even though their crimes are greater. Not only are they driving under the influence, but they are partaking of alcohol before they have turned 21, yet one more crime! And for some reason they idea that a simple warning will deter them from continuing this destructive behavior that will likely lead to someone other than themselves being injured or killed will suffice is quite ridiculous. I rather like those "far more strict" punishments. It is far less likely that the offender will re-offend if he/she is forced find other forms of transportation for a year and pay a small fine.

Especially when they are not 'either/or' like ours. You get the full menu.

Ohio requires "party plates" a bright yellow plate with red numbers to shame DUI convicts. But like Willie said it's pretty easy to get out of penalties.

^ Not here. If you blow over the limit, the penalties begin immediately. Your license is taken away on the spot and your car is towed away.

Not so much to shame the perpetrators as to warn anyone who might be on the road with them. A, albeit small, flag waving with a warning: "Watch out, I'm an idiot and I don't give a damn about my life or that of anyone else. Share the road with me at your own peril!" It would be far more effective to have those who were convicted be forced, after their driving suspension is over, to have the above emblazoned, in bright letters all over their vehicles. Would give the rest of us fair warning that our lives could be put in danger on a whim.
