After suffering through a childhood with cod liver oil before each and every breakfast, I stopped using it as soon as I became old enough to make my own decisions. Now, I'm considering to start up again. I haven't used any dietary supplements for the past two years or so (since I moved out from home..).

I've moved from the awful cod liver oil to capsules with omega 3-6-9. Just couldn't stand the taste anymore. Just like jubalon i've had this supplement forced on me since childhood.

I used to take 2 capsules daily. My doctor warned me about the blood thinning effects of Fish Oil Supplements, despite their health benefits. I am now down to less frequent intervals - 2x weekly. They do seem to improve mood a bit from what I personally could tell.

:-)

Does fish oil have mercury like actual fish does, at least the ones from the ocean?

probably filtered, but its obtained for example by steaming the actual fish liver (for a certain oil) so probably. Mercury is not easy to filter

I once tried salmon oil and the taste was disgusting. plus you would still taste it several hours afterwards.
do those omega 3-6-9 capsules taste anything like fish?

Nope, they don't taste anything at all. Just swallow them down with water.:-)

Phun Pharmacy Tip!

If you stick your fish oil caps. in the freezer, you wont burp fish!

I think like every supplement, if you take mega doses you're asking for trouble. People love to over do supplements, because ya know if 2gm per day is good for you, then 120gm twice a day must be amazing! After all its natural, so that means there are no side effects! Never mind that things like digoxin come from plants and have a very tiny therapeutic range, before becoming toxic.

I vote, that if you elect to take fish oil, you take what the bottle recommends. Unless your doctor says other wise. However that does not mean you go right up to the pharmacist and hand them some scrap of paper with a misspelled name and no strength and yell "My doctor told me to take get this..."

I cannot eat fish, but I take 2-3 fish oil tablets daily. I have never tasted fish or had fish burps. I have no idea about the internal benefits, but I definitely think fish oil maintains skin appearance and complexion.

Really? Why is that?

Good question, maybe they digest or pass through the stomach before dissolving/melting.

I take the enteric coated and never have any of the "fish burps".

A little research on them and you would think they are the miracle drug. Who knows.

I have started seeing a prescription version advertised that is know available through your doctor and is recommend for people with certain kinds of heart disease and high triglyceride levels.

I've heard about this fish oil thing. How expensive is it? Do you take it every day? What if you already eat a lot of fish - like a few times weekly?

I swallow...one capsule daily! I've read and my doctor told me that I should take at least one a day; he feels that the benefits are extensive.

I take 4 a day, by doctors order.

I have prescription fish oil capsules and get no after taste.

The first ones I tried were horrible even trying the freezer thing.

I looked on the shelf the other day and I could not find any that I had complete confidence were also totally soy free.

^I'll look it up.

Ingredients: purified deep sea fish oil (from anchovies and sardines), soft gel capsule (gelatin, water, glycerin, natural lemon oil), natural lemon oil, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol in sesame oil), d-alpha tocopherol, rosemary extract

d-alpha tocopherol is vitamin E which is most often derived from soy oil. Since they do not specify it's source I cannot be confident it is completely soy free.

I don't use the capsule form. I use the real oil, I take it by the teaspoon. But i just noticed the vitamin e is soybean oil. i'm going to write them and ask them to change that ingredient, since i am not a fan of soy.

whats ur problem with soy?????
