So, I went to the proctologist today and he told me I've got an anal fistula and need to have surgery to correct it. I'm really worried about this. Will I suffer from incontinence? Will I be able to bottom again? :confused: Please, I need some advice! Thanks :help:

It's very difficult to answer these questions without knowing if there was an underlying condition like Crohn's that caused it or what the surgeon is planning for the repair (i.e. is he planning a temporary colostomy?).

Did the surgeon give you any more information? If you're not comfortable with what the surgeon told you, are you planning on getting a second opinion?

Fuck, I hope he's not planning on a colostomy! I didn't have Crohn's nor any symptoms associated with it.

I've been to two proctologists. The first one told me I had an anal fissure, then after about three months without the fissure healing I went to this other doctor and he told me about the fistula. I'm not planning on having the procedure with him, I'm waiting till I get back from my hometown to where I go to college, where there are better doctors, to look with whom I'm having the procedure.

If there's a medical school clinic near your college town, it might be worth having them look at the issue. Fistulas do happen but usually there's an underlying disease process that caused the fistula. And the gastroenterologist should be discussing your options with you on how best to treat the problem.

It would be good if your doctor has established an open and professional relationship with you so you can ask these questions directly of someone who has diagnosed it.

If it helps though, my guy had a fistula repaired when he was younger. It has not recurred, and there is no difficulty in our sex life or discomfort for him.

@KaraBulut
I've been having lots of heartburn too lately, you think it's related? should I go to the gastroenterologist too then?

@bankside
I didn't have that kind of confidence with that doctor, but I think you're right, I should ask a professional. Anyway, thank you very much for your answer, it gave me lots of hope!

Thank you both! :-)

In the US, a gastroenterologist specializes in disorders of the entire digestive system- stomach, colon, liver, etc. A proctologist in the US is called a colorectal surgeon and you would usually be sent to them for surgery, not for a diagnosis.
