Florida man kills pregnant wife, mistaking her for an intruder (Penn Live; November 6, 2020)

Claimed he thought she was an intruder. In short, this idiot had a pregnant wife and little child in the house with him. Saw a figure walking in the dark in the middle of the night and shot at it. Turned out to be his wife. Got her in the head.

In other words, this idiot control freak didn't even allow his family members to go to the bathroom at night. To defy him is a death sentence.

Florida Man has displaced the black-faced buffoon caricature of the Vaudeville Minstrel Shows.

He's become a trope.

I say if one has to go, both should be banished.

If we're not supposed to have tropes, then let's not have them.

Do they still have that game going around, where you enter the words "Florida Man" and your birthday into google, and see what comes up?

Don't you just love the Second Amendment.

I've most intentionally never owned a gun nor had one in my home, as I was pretty sure I'd use it. Knowing myself, I never wanted that.

Tempers need time to dissipate. Guns don't afford that.

Florida Man doesn’t have anything to do with any caricature though. It started because when the media would report stories happening in Florida, they would state it as “Florida Man” being arrested or apprehended for committing crime. The meme flourished from that because it was a non descriptor and it sounded funny.

But it has become a caricature, abstractly.

It has been used numerous times in Hot Topics to ridicule Florida itself.

If that's not a caricature, I'll need to see the definition showing that it has changed.

The Ozark hillbilly, the Californian hippie/dopehead, the Italian mafioso, the black gangbanger, the effeminate gay, the butch feminist, the uneducated Midwestern hayseed, the simpleton Canuck, and on and on are our caricatures.

Our society is full of caricatures. Almost all stereotypes have been made into caricatures for derision and ridicule.

I mean I personally don’t think it’s a big deal? Maybe I am just a good sport, but Florida can handle a few punches from the nay sayers. There are problematic people here but Florida is a beautiful state and weather is generally great. I love living here and I have only been here a couple years.

I understand what you are saying, I just don’t find it to be too bad when it comes to “Florida Man.” If people are using it to specifically make fun of a certain class or type of people, I’d call it out but generally I personally don’t see it used that way and it’s meant to just be fun.

Didn’t some famous sports person shoot his wife when she went to the bathroom? I seem to remember his defense not going that great for him. We’ll see how it for this guy.

That was Oscar Pistorius.

It was probably stuffed cabbage night. She backfired in the hallway on her way to the bathroom and he thought it was gunfire :(

I don't think any of the groups are particularly fragile or vulnerable. But I have heard all of the caricatures used in sneering ways to disrespect entire populations. They frequently equate it to the people of Wal-Mart slurs, which is never done good-naturedly. Both are wrong.

Considering the fumbles and gaffs that "Florida man" makes are found in almost every state in the union, it seems contemptuous for people to use it who never praise Florida.

My observation is that it has been used as a political lampoon ever since the left grew ire for Florida when the Gore election fiasco cost the Democrats the White House for eight years.

It has been used derisively in Hot Topics repeatedly, and not in good-natured jabbing, albeit often from Canadians, so not necessarily opinions widely seen as accurate or mattering in US politics.

If you know who it is then you shouldn't be doing something crazy i understand people are protected on what or whoever comes into house now he's gotta live that for along time

Probably not in this case, but I have seen Forensic Files episodes where husbands in fact intentionally shot or murdered pregnant wives, not in love with them or their expectant offspring.

I guess I hope that's not true, although neither alternative here is good, obviously.

Yea you never why he did it I mean if you don't see your pregnant wife next to you in bed and then you hear a noise and wonder its someone breaking in

Florida man, swing state, not a swing, red, blue. I moved here for the view in my yard and the three mile drive to the beach and the 80 degree weather in winter. Screw all the morons and anti-maskers. I don’t need to be anywhere near them.

I wonder if he used the Oscar Pistorious defence?

Oscar was so cute--had a crush on him--I think he had inner rage that he had no legs and felt inadequate -that should have been his defense---I forgive him.
