Footballer's Wives Format Sold To US

Although the British version of Footballer's Wives has been shown on BBC America the show's creators, Shed Productions, have sold the Format to the ABC network. The US version will feature American Football players instead of soccer players but many of the same plotlines will be used. With it being on one of the main networks and not a cable channel I don't know if that will mean a reduction in the sex and nudity featured in the UK version.

And like other britcoms redone in the states, it will be a piss poor carbon copy with a laugh track.

Bet it won't be nearly as good. The only one that has been translated well is The Office.

I miss FW. I didn't want it to finish. I have all the DVD's, except Series 5 (that isn't out yet though).

The American version will be rubbish no doubt! No one can re-create the Amber/Tanya fighting etc.

Shagging someone to death

I've never heard of Footballer's Wives referred to as a sitcom (or britcom).

I haven't seen Footballer's Wives but I'm sure the American version will be crap, especially if it's on ABC. It'll practically be another Desperate Housewives. Depending on what day of the week and how late it comes on, will decide how racy they get since ABC is a Disney channel.

I stopped watching Desperate Housewives when BBC America started airing episodes of Footballer's Wives. I've turned many friends onto it. It's a much better guilty pleasure than DH. However, turning it into an American version will not work. With all the FCC regulations on network television, I'm anticipating that the most risque thing is that someone may say "dang" while in church.

So for those of us who haven't seen Footballer's Wives or know very little about it would you recommend buying the DVD's?

If you like camp OTT drama with lots of male nudity then yes I'd recommend it. it did go downhill towards the end when all the best characters left. There was also a spin-off show called Footballer's Wives: Extra Time (which was pretty crap apart from the nudity from the male lead).

Awesome! I can't wait!! I've been dying to see an episode of this show. I've only seen clips on YouTube. I love Desperate Housewives, and if they keep the drama & scandalous-ness (is that a word? LOL) of Footballers Wives for the American version then I am definitely tuning in! I only wish they didn't change it to American football players; I really wanted to see the Brit version.

I just don't think it will work. Apart from the fact that it will have to be much less graphic, the wives of American football players are pretty much non-entities as public figures. British footballers' girlfriends/wives get much more publicity in the British tabloids and the shopping/champagne drinking/cosmetic surgery is pretty well documented (though I'm not aware of any who have stolen another woman's baby and killed their own after the swap.) It's like Ab Fab and Fawlty Towers, perfect on British TV, but impossible to translate to ours. Everyone who's tried to do so has failed miserably.

I always had a soft spot for Shannon. Me and a friend always used to be 'Shannon' and 'Harley'

Tanya and Amber were my favourite characters though

I hated Shannon. Her voice got on my nerves. Amber was never as good a bitch as Tanya. For me the best character, other than Tanya, was Hazel.

Had to laugh when someone, in another Forum where I posted about this, said that Footballer's Wives storylines and characters weren't very believable and the show wasn't really realistic. Obviously they didn't get it!
