That looks VERY reminiscent of Chicago and New York in the 1930s when the Tribune tower was built…Abraj Al Bait…
CowboyBob, I adore the photographs you posted. And I absolutely sympathize with the tone of your post.
But, I think there's reasonable reason to be concerned over infrastructure for the poor pilgrims. Not everyone has a hotel room, and I'm not sure there are bathrooms all over the place. Are there?

Telstra, this ISN'T a thread about Roman times, even if that's what momentarily strikes your fecal fancy. Start a different thread for that.
This thread is more interestingly about Mecca. It's not clear to me that all Muslims enjoy the same fundamental equitable privileges during a Hajj.
If I were a Muslim I'd be pissed!
The Masjid Al Haram (the large mosque) is a "multilevel complex houses 1,440 toilets and 1091 ablution units (portable fully functioned bathrooms) to serve worshippers. Hundreds of drinking fountains provides chilled water, transported to the Holy Mosque through an underground service tunnel."

It appears they're prepared for a large influx of people. Saudi Arabia is a wealthy country.
Mecca and the Masjid al Haram are two different places. Mecca is the locus under discussion.
Do all poor pilgrims have access to toilets and basic hygiene? Where do pilgrims who are sleeping on the streets poo and shower?
Mecca is the city and Masjid al Haram is the mosque located in Mecca.
People sleeping in the streets probably use one of the toilets or portable bathrooms in the mosque when they enter. If urgent, they probably go behind a tree like anyone else.
Are you kidding? 1 tree for 1000+++ people ?
If urgent, they probably go behind a tree like anyone else.
Mecca looks like Las Vegas.
Who's in control? It's shitty.
If you go onto some Muslim forums, you'll find plenty of concern about the toilets during the Hajj - they are there certainly, but apparently often unclean and unsanitary. One comment I found was "Imodium is your best friend"!. I was talking to one of my postgraduate students, who went on the Hajj last year, and she was very impressed with the organization, although after coming from a Western country (Australia) she found the third-world conditions hard to take. I would guess that anywhere that humans gather in huge numbers there would be plenty of shit, and not enough clean toilets. The Hindu Kumbh Mela rivals (and possibly exceeds) the Hajj in its numbers, and bathing in the Ganges, India's "holy river" is basically swimming in an open sewer: the river is so polluted that it is dead - it is empty of oxygen, and can no longer support life.
Hmmph - humans!
