What do you mean?
Anywhere you live, its all about the people there who makes you feel good or not.
I mean the new architecture is crappy and commercial. The way those hotels loom over the Mosque is absurd and shows very little respect for the sanctity of the space or the experience of the pilgrims. It's crass and ugly.
I would guess that anywhere that humans gather in huge numbers there would be plenty of shit, and not enough clean toilets. The Hindu Kumbh Mela rivals (and possibly exceeds) the Hajj in its numbers, and bathing in the Ganges, India's "holy river" is basically swimming in an open sewer: the river is so polluted that it is dead - it is empty of oxygen, and can no longer support life.
Hmmph - humans!

The Ganges worsens as it approaches the sea. But the closer you are to the source, the cleaner it is. I'd jump in at Rishikesh (and maybe even at Haridwar on the top end during the Kumbh Mela!) I've dunked my toes in it further down and lived. I do despise the devastation that the large human population has wrought on India's environment.
