Former Democratic Governor of Texas, Ann Richards, Dead

Re: Ann Richards has Died

Oh no! She's one of my heroes. The great state of Texas has lost one of it's strongest, most vibrant voices today. She had more in common with the common Texan than the moron in office right now and for that I will miss her the most.

Good night Ann. God bless ya.

That's too bad - she had style

I loved her line "Poor George, he can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." - a good one for sure

saw her on CNN quite a bit - always thought she was feisty in a good way

rest in peace

I'm devastated. What an amazing woman. It's a shame she wasn't president. I'm speechless, really.

That era in Texas politics produced some great people, I wonder what happened.

Re: Ann Richards has Died

:( :( :(
Wow, I hadn't heard. I'm sorry to read this...

She would have made a great president.

Re: Ann Richards has Died

She was governor back when I lived in Texas. She was great. Too bad. :(

Re: Ann Richards has Died

She is the second female Texas Democrat to die in the last 2 weeks. Nellie Connelley, wife of Texas Gov. John Connelley past away last week. Mrs. C. was riding in the car with Pres. and Mrs. Kennedy and the governor when JFK was assassinated in 1963. Mrs. C. was a classy lady. I love Gov. Richards becasue she was so irreverent and outspoken. I did not always agree with her politics, but she was a hoot. BTW, if you are in Texas, be sure to vote for Kinky Friedman for governor in November. Let's throw the Demwits and Repugs out of office and show them "We the People" still has meaning.

Re: Ann Richards has Died

We can only hope that Kinky Friedman gets elected the next governor of Texas and carries on the tradition of outspokenness started by the late governor Ann Richards, and then ruined by that Bush character.

....and yes, Ann would have had my vote for President. Rest in peace.

Re: Ann Richards has Died

Didn't always agree with her politically, but was one of those leaders whose presence and character were remarkable,as well as her sass and home grown Texas wit.She was an original who spoke common sense and hated bull, and called people on it.Her place on the American political scene will be missed.

Re: Ann Richards has Died

I'm sad I didn't get to know her public figure.. She seemed like a cool lady.

I had the good fortune of knowing Ann Richards personally.

In in tears to hear of her loss.

Never, in my lifetime, has there been more of a Leader and a compassionate individual.

She made me proud to call myself a Texan.

True Texas Royalty!

Re: Ann Richards has Died

The New York Times obit on Gov. Richards mentions how an unsuccessful political opponent tried to use her alcoholism against her, but not the hateful lesbian-bating that George W. Bush partisans engaged in under the direction of none other than Karl Rove when Bush defeated her for re-election in 1994.

Rove's modus operandi in campaigns against everyone from Richards to Kerry has always been to figure out an opponent's strengths and make them seem like liabilities. Richards appointed a few out gays and lesbians to her staff, breaking new ground in Texas. And Rove starts a whispering campaign that she's sleeping with one of the lesbian aides.

History will be a lot kinder to Ann Richards than the man who defeated her with smear tactics.

A very colorful politician to be sure. She was a decent person as well. Rest in peace.

I was crying when I read this last night. She was a wonderful woman, Texan and true Democrat. She is the reason I joined the Democratic party in high school.
I had the priveledge of meeting her twice. She's larger than life. Her memory will go on in the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders.
Bless you, Ann!

I always loved her public appearances and her wit. Something about Southern/Texan women!

Lookin' forward to meeting ya up there lady!

Re: Ann Richards has Died

Former Texas Governor Ann Richards has died. She was a firey governor and conscience of the US Democratic Party and the country. Her voice and wisdom will be missed.

I totally agree. She was not without her faults, her illness with alcohol, but this was a politican who I think listened to her consituents and her heart and not always to the politicans around her.

I think one could say she was a consumate politican - and in a postive way.

^^ A great politician, a great lady. She will be mourned and missed.
