CLAPHAM JUNCTION

Directed by Adrian Shergold
UK , 2007 120 min , video
Fort Lauderdale Premiere
Those looking for light fare, be warned, Clapham Junction is as edgy, raw, gritty, and disturbing as it gets…and it is not to be missed!

Set during a 36 hour period in urban-London, Clapham Junction is a film where the characters and their lives intersect often with tragic result. Though the comparisons to Paul Haggis' Crash will be quickly drawn, this film takes you places Haggis wouldn't dream of entering.

Gavin and Will are getting married amidst family and friends, but it isn't long before the vows of fidelity are broken. Waiter Alfie catches Will's eye at the reception and the two become forever linked. Novelist Robin has just stricken out with his editor when he pops into a public men's room for some relief and action.

Love of Siam was a long but really good movie. I hated the ending though.

Sounds good. Living in Gainesville where do you get the opportunity to view foreign language films? On campus, a small theater or a festival?

Coca's not sure how to get in touch with him and she's really not sure what she's going to tell her straight-laced conservative parents. But then Coca gets an idea. Now Manuela is going to butch it up for Coca's parents while still trying to hold on to himself. However, when things begin to spin out of control and this comedy of errors starts to include a shotgun wedding, a confused neighbor, and several cases of mistaken identity it is up to Manuela to set things straight…in a manner of speaking.

Their new home is CollegeBoysLive.com, a voyeur webcam house rigged with 32 cameras. Their every move is watched by thousands of paying members while creating conflict with their neighbors. SHANK

Directed by Simon Pearce
UK , 2009 87 min , video
Fort Lauderdale Premiere

This gritty, cutting-edge drama is a part of a new genre from contemporary queer filmmakers that show another side of gay life. Shank is no cozy affair; void of the cliché plot devices typical of a coming of age story, this is a film that is refreshingly shocking, very explicit and painful at times.

Yet under the surface of violence, hatred and confusion there is also more than a streak of tenderness. Cal is an 18 year-old member of a gang that wiles its days away in a haze of drugs, sex and random acts of violence. He is desperate that the other members do not discover that he is struggling to come to terms with being gay. This becomes difficult due to his unspoken desire for his best friend, A chance encounter with a French Student who treats him with love and kindness gives tough thug Cal his first meaningful relationship. The other gang members are reluctant to lose one of their own, and so engineer an explosive confrontation that leaves no one unscathed and everyone traumatized and transformed.

Winner of the Roger Walker Dack Award for Emerging Talent in Queer Cinema, this brilliant debut from 21 year-old director Simon Pearce is compelling, completely unique, and full of energy. Its fresh take on a slice of British gay youth culture makes it a must-see for anyone who loves movies that shake you up.

Beyond Biba

Directed by Louis Price
UK , 2009 55 min , video
Fort Lauderdale Premiere

Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960's and 70's. A phenomenon in the truest sense of the word, BIBA has left an indelible mark on the history of British fashion. It was not only the place where celebrities like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Twiggy shopped but, where arguably the most powerful figure in the world of fashion, infamous editor of Vogue Anna Wintour (the devil in The Devil Wears Prada) got her start.

Just as Barbara was a key ingredient in the cultural explosion that occurred in London in the 1960's, she also found herself at the birth of the incredible regeneration of Miami Beach in the late 1980's and 90's. Barbara still resides in Miami Beach and continues to work as one of the most respected interior designers in the United States. This film offers a rare insight into Barbara Hulanicki by sharing her memories from the impossible glamour of BIBA to the murder of her father.

We are taken on an intimate tour of her home, her studio, and South Beach itself. We witness Barbara's amazing sketches and gain entrance to a private exhibition of them. The exhibition is attended by friends and fans like the Rolling Stones Ron Wood and super-models Kate Moss and Twiggy.

Though not a gay film, this fascinating documentary will undoubtedly have a unique appeal to gay audiences. Beyond Biba is an all access portrait of an overlooked and elusive artist who refused to merely give up and live in the shadows of the past.

She dreams of marrying a heterosexual man from the West and spends much of her time on the internet looking for someone to come rescue her. Many promise to come, but time after time, Raquela gets stood up at the airport. Out Late

Directed by Beatrice Alda & Jennifer Brooke
US , 2008 63 min , video
South Florida Premiere
MTV Networks remarked "Out Late' is a powerful documentary that reveals emotional, untold stories from a formerly silent generation. It's a liberating experience watching this well made film, for it teaches us that it's never too late to seize the day and live your life to its fullest."

LGBT cinema is not lacking for films that deal with the process of coming out, however the experiences of those who come out late in life is a topic that we rarely see. The film introduces five individuals who made a decisive change after the age of 55 to come out as lesbian, gay, or transgender. Why did they wait until their golden years to come out? What has that process been like? What was the turning point that caused each of these people to finally openly declare their sexuality? Out Late attempts to answer each of these questions.

This film delves into the personal journeys of men and women from Canada, Kansas and even Florida. We find out what ultimately led these dynamic individuals to make the liberating choice to pursue fully integrated lives.

Partners in business and life, Beatrice Alda and Jennifer Brooke's have created an exceptional feature length documentary. Out Late examines the lives of the elderly gay and lesbian community. This film will strike a chord with our entire community and moved feminist icon Gloria Steinem to remark, "This film is very moving--and so important."
