If the situation were reversed I think most people would just treat it as a funny "guy hit by ball" video. But there would also be comments about how weak women are and how bad they are at sports.

For me the situation boils down to this: a person is in a position to protect another person at the risk of himself. In the end self-preservation won out.

There was actually a mother and son sitting behind the couple. The son was sitting on his mother’s lap. When the ball comes flying towards that area in the stand, the mother turned her body away from the ball and used her arm to shield her son.

The guy was already standing up. He had space to move aside. The girl thought her boyfriend would catch the ball and was caught off-guard and didn’t have time to move out of her seat. I don’t see why she would want to catch the ball. Catching a flying baseball with your bare hands is difficult (a small surface is used to intercept a small fast object) and hurts like hell.

A hard projectile hurtling at a high velocity that sometimes exceed 100mph will cause a great deal of pain, and is potentially lethal. Serious souvenir ball catchers carry baseball gloves with them to games.
