I've been doing some on-line research about fountain pens recently. I have long been a sucker for them--I was in elementary school when I got one for the first time. Even as a wee lad, I liked that which was long out of date... And I sometimes used a fountain pen for homework in high school, and thought it helped make my illegible handwriting a little less illegible. Although I never used a good pen at school, for fear of something happening to it. I'd rather have a cheap ballpoint stolen than even a cheap Sheaffer. (Oddly, a cheap ballpoint stolen from me at school might have been "hot." I sometimes got pens from my from my father's desk in the study. And he'd procured them from the supply room at work. Although, he probably wouldn't have brought it home in the first place if he weren't a workaholic, who brought mountains of work home each night.)
Although it's been a long time since I actually used a fountain pen--at least on any regular basis. Most of my writing for the last 30+ years has been on a computer, not with paper and pen. Every so often, something happens to reignite my interest. Most recently, it's been seeing fountain pens at my local Office Depot.
As I do my on-line reading, I find myself a bit astounded as I read to notice how diverse the fountain pen world appears to be. A larger variety of pens and inks than I'd have imagined possible for a niche product. Then, I guess I've seen this before with other niche products (like equipment related to playing vinyl LPs).
My favorite thing so far was seeing a comment from someone who'd used a fountain for school work say the best ink for tests was Waterman's "Serenity Blue". I guess something "serene" might be nice when taking that all-important final exam!
I am now struggling to resist temptation to buy atoy a new fountain pen... As I say, I really don't write much anymore. But there is that voice saying maybe a nice pen would make writing a grocery list more fulfilling...
I'd better go and cut up my credit card before I make an impulse buy I'll later regret...
