I just got an email from Rick Jacobs of the Courage Campaign, in which he referred to "hate speech from Fox News". I'm looking for views from anyone who watches often enough (say, once a week or more) to get an idea about that.

Does Fox engage in hate speech? If you think so, how about examples?

Please, no edited clips; if you've got vids, make them full-segment.
 
Sorry Kulindahr, I've never been able to watch for very long. I dislike news mentality that loud is better - volume is more powerful than content.

I have gotten the distinct feeling that they are biased and frequently purposely misspeaking. That they give their customers / clients what they want regardless of whether it is completely factual or accurate. I do not believe I could watch the show for any length of time for weeks on end.

I’ve watched Fox News Sunday (hosted by Chris Wallace) for the past several years. The format and its moderator seem reasonably professional and more balanced than the show’s lineup of commentators might otherwise suggest. I do not recall ever observing any hate speech on that particular program.
 
One man's opinion is another man's hate speech.

The simple reality is that Fox, although undoubtedly biased, ideologically-focused and frequently non-factual, don't indulge true hate speech. If they did, they'd spend a lot of time in court. Jaded insults, sarcasm, partisanship, ignorance and poor research are all terrible traits for a so-called News organisation, but they aren't hate speech.

Frankly, I don't have the stomach to listen to their broadcasts long enough to tune into any potential language they may use to incite violence or prejudicial action against others. The channel is hardly known for their comforting embrace for minorities and gays (how many times do I need to hear references to our 'behavior' and 'lifestyle' to know I'm not welcome because I am one of 'those').
 
Beck is the closest thing to hate speech you'll find on Fox. But he's genuinely nuts, and I doubt he understands or believes much that comes out of his own mouth. And he's gone.

It's still amazes me he has any fans left, but he still has million of paranoid, tin-foil-hat-wearing dye-hards that revere his every word and conspiracy theories.
 
When Mrs. Palin uses the term "blood libel" I consider that hate speech. In fact everything that comes out of her mouth I consider hate speech. I believe her to be one of the most loathsome individuals on the planet.
 
They skirt around it all the time, but they've become experts in stopping just shy of anything that could be called "hate speech".

For example, Hannity and others often refer to Obama as "the anointed one".

That annoys me. It's inaccurate, "smart -assy" and, one could argue, religiously offensive, as there is only one who was truly "anointed".

But, they get away with it, day by day. Is it "health care" ? No, it's "Obamacare", etc.

For the weak-minded that listen to this crap for hours everyday, it gets into their brains and slowly changes their opinions.

All of which would be fine, I suppose, but it's that "fair and balanced" thing that really frosts my ass.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

That's your opinion, nothing more, nothing less. That's why many people are opposed to blanket hate speech legislation. One man's hate speech is another man's loud argument. (though, there ARE clear instances of hate speech, and we all know generally what that line is.) While you might think 'blood libel' is hate speech, I'd wager there are many, many people that disagree. Is it a stupid use of the term? Definitely. Hate speech? Meh.

Calling him the anointed one isn't hate speech. If they said he was the spawn of satan that should be returned to the nether-world with violence? Yeah, that'd be hate speech.

Telling someone "that's your opinion" does not decrease the validity of what they had to say.

I watch Fox, MSNBC, and CNN. I can differentiate opinion from news. Fox is biased, so is MSNBC. But I don't hear hate speech. I hear things that are marginally offensive. I do tend to hear offensive things from pundits that I do not agree with more than those I agree with. I think that is human nature and safe to absolve the digressions of those you agree with at the same time hold firm against those that you don't.

When challenged about the wrong actions of those you support it feels safe to point out the other side does it or did it too, as if the opponent's wrong justifies your person's wrong actions. This puzzles me. I catch myself doing it all the time, and I hate it when I do it.

Sounds like the general view is that they don't do hate speech, but they tread close to the line with some regularity, though this includes commentators along with news.

If hate speech is a 1 on a scale of zero to one, and Fox does .06 -- .09 with regularity, does that at some point add up to 1?
 
A lot of it is people don't separate actual news reporting from commentary. Saying "President Obama visited England and Ireland last week" is reporting the news. Saying it like "The Anointed One ignored the problems at home while cavorting with royalty" is derogatory commentary.

Both MSNBC and Fox are news mixed with commentary. O'Reilly, Hannity, Olberman, Schultz are mostly commentating on the news using their biases. Rachel Maddow is more news, but with a left slant.

Glen Beck borders on hate speech, but I don't think it's actual hate. It's mostly over the top commentary to attract attention to himself. He needs to sell his books and keep the speaking fees high.

You can easily find actual hate speech on the internet.
 
Gee. Beck is still only pulling about 1.65 mil viewers......ouch.

He has to hate that.

By the way, Cooper won the 25-54 audience in his time slot on the 25th against On the Record and Schulz's apology for pissing on Laura's tits.
