Well this was surprising.

http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/...-france-gay-marriage-would-hurt-children?lite

PARIS - Several hundred thousand people converged at the Eiffel Tower in Paris Sunday to protest President Francois Hollande's bill to legalize same-sex marriage by June.

Protesters waved pink and blue flags showing a father, mother and two children. Many had taken long train and bus rides from outside Paris.
Hollande has pledged to push through a same-sex marriage law with his Socialist party’s parliamentary majority, but his opponents have dented public support and forced deputies to put off a plan to allow lesbian couples access to artificial insemination.

Basically the Socialist French government is pushing through marriage equality in France, which would make it the 12th country in the world to recognize our marriages. In response, anti-gay homophobes by the hundreds of thousands stormed Paris to protest the incoming law change. With disgusting ignorance, their protest centered around the idea that a child is best raised by one father and one mother. Of course, they're completely ignoring the fact that a majority of heterosexuals fail to honor this ideal by not marrying, divorcing, and re-marrying into conjoined families. Still, social conservatives were never one to think that far when it comes to logic. Damn the gays, after all. They'd rather have a bastard child raised in a broken home than have two mothers or two fathers.

What are your thoughts? Will France's government push through marriage equality, or will the bigots get their way? Recent polls used to show an approval rating of 65% for French marriage equality. Thanks to the scare tactics of the French social conservatives, that poll has dropped to 52%.

This was really surprising to hear yesterday.

Hollande has to push forward with this. If the bigots get their way with their fantasy of what marriage is in the 21st century, God knows where the mobs will stop.

Re: Frnace: Anti-Gay Protestors Storm "Gay Pair-eee"

I was not surprised, even if I'm enraged at them. Still even 500,000 is not enough to make things change. The bill will pass.

Still I'm angry at the government because they have really badly presented the bill. The communication war is mostly done by the anti, and the pro are too politicized as leftist or far leftist. There are no proper debate in the media, just two fronts with bad arguments.

I was appalled to hear some French protesters saying blank faced that there is marriage between 3 people in Canada since the marriage equality there. And nobody to call the bullshit. It's infuriating.

But nonetheless marriage equality and rights of adoption will pass.

And how has NOM been involved with this?
I hope oakpope correct,

Re: Frnace: Anti-Gay Protestors Storm "Gay Pair-eee"

Some leaders of NOM helped the most extreme groups of anti in France, designing pamphlets etc.

Even if the right threaten to take it back, it will be impossible, as Spain has shown. There would be no legal ground to withdrawing a civil right, it would be struck down by the constitutional council or the European court I'm sure.

Nonetheless, mainly because of the politicization of the debate, the % in favor has dropped :( I blame the government for not having established the dialogue and the base for the bill soon enough and letting the far rightist take up this excuse to hurt the left government :(

As usual in France, even if you are for a bill, if it comes from the other side, it's 'evil' :( Sad.

Re: Frnace: Anti-Gay Protestors Storm "Gay Pair-eee"

please respect the traditional French marriage of a man, a woman, and the man's 3 mistresses.

Thanks loki, I laughed out loud.

Ungh! Me hope Oakpope correct too, White Eagle!

(Sorry I couldn't help it with your avatar and that saying I was on the floor... it is the little things for me)

You have to remember that France will protest a 15-minute change in the time of mail delivery. It's more like a ritual there rather than a meaningful political contribution.

Regardless of the number (120,000 or 340,000), it's still a fraction of what Paris Pride got this year (700,000).

The law will pass, no problem.
