France has declared war on al-Qaida, and matched its fighting words with a first attack on a base camp of the terror network's North African branch, after the terror network killed a French aid worker it took hostage in April.

The declaration and attack marked a shift in strategy for France, usually discrete about its behind-the-scenes battle against terrorism.

"We are at war with al-Qaida," Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Tuesday, a day after President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the death of 78-year-old hostage Michel Germaneau.

The humanitarian worker had been abducted April 20 or 22 in Niger by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, and was later taken to Mali, officials said.

The killers will "not go unpunished," Sarkozy said in unusually strong language, given France's habit of employing quiet cooperation with its regional allies - Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Algeria - in which the al-Qaida franchise was spawned amid an Islamist insurgency.

so many things come to mind, but the primary one is this... how will it affect our ongoing missions in afghanistan and pakistan.

will we coordinate with them or will we see confusion in the battlefield as a result of american and french forces not cooperating effectively.

I imagine the French will surrender in about a week and al Quaeda will occupy France.

I guess that means we will be going back to Freedom Fries.

HA.. I am willing to bet that France will be asking for use of american bases in the region and as a result, Franco American relations may improve.

ok ok guys I get the point that france isn't the best at warfare.

there are worse things you could say about a nation.

I think Franco American relations improved about 30 seconds after the last elections.

So many Americans are ignorant on our close ties with France and their help with defeating the Brits in the Revolutionary War.

Then again what can you expect really from the class of people who think FAUX News is really "Fair & Balanced"? They ain't rocket scientists, that's for sure.

You know, I really don't know why the Anglo-Saxon nations feel the need to bitch about France all the time. They have a highly professional army, better trained and better equipped then the reserves the US has been deploying everywhere lately.

Highly debatable. Certain PARTS of the French military are quite good, but as a whole its nowhere near either GB or the US.

More likely the other way around...

You would think the US and GB would be happy to be given a hand in Africa by the nation with the most expertise and knowledge in/ of the region.

(I'm dutch btw)

Did you just call America an Anglo Saxon nation?

A nation with inhabitants before the Anglo-Saxons and one where African Slaves first colonized America after the british initially retreated because of bad weather? A nation too where the first Europeans were actually Spanish and not Anglo-Saxon?

Maybe you're talking about Iceland?

I'm quite sure the French standing army is better trained and equipped then the US reserves....but it's really beside the point

More specifically the US, but yes. Also beside the point though.

We're no more an Anglo Saxon nation than a West African (slaves) nation or a Spanish (El Conquistadores) nation.

.

Doubtful. I have extensive experience with the reserves, and I can tell you with some certainty that their training, etc. is better than anything the french could offer.

It's ironic that the very best French troops are not native French but foreign volunteers in the Legion. The Legion are doing a bang up job in Afghanistan right now and have conducted joint operations with American forces against the Taliban.

Unfortunately, Splash, it's the truth. Consider these facts:

•The French welshed on NATO duties very early; I think it was the mid-60s.

• The fact that American tourists visited France, and refused to adapt to the French ways, exacerbated an already-wide cultural gap.

•The French have never gotten over the idea that the French language, once the lingua franca of the world, have taken a back seat to English.

•Almost everybody I've ever met who has visited France has commented on the rudeness of the natives. I can't speak for the English, but by most accounts, they really do hate Americans more deeply than anybody except for the Islamics.

•The US (and presumably the UK) has historically been pro-Israeli. By contrast, France always sided with the Palestinians, let millions of them immigrate to France, and now is paying the price for it.

If you ask me, they got what they deserved.

DeGaulle - a total prick - agreed.

American tourists: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in France, do as they do in Miami? No; fuck that, I agree with the French.

French is still a major world language. And English is getting messed up by Globish. I want French back.

American tourists? Those are the people who've visited france and found it rude? I thought it was great. But standards are different for every social interaction. Just one example: restaurants.

At a good American restaurant (and that kind of service is creeping in north of the border too via US chains), the server will hover over you and check on you and ask you if everything is okay, and offer to re-fill your drink and "create a relationship with you" while they "romance the menu."

At a good French restaurant, the waiter will leave you the fuck alone. They assume you can either read the menu, and that hovering over you will only be a bother. At the very least they know that pointing out any inability to read would only make you feel awkward. If you want more information, they know you would prefer to ask than to sit through a recital of the "daily special." And for your comfort and privacy, you will never see them during the meal - but if you need something, look up; they'll be there.

It isn't rudeness, it is just one example of showing respect for a totally different set of customer expectations. They will never act deferential ( the customer is sometimes an ass), but I have always found them to be professional.

And the US (and to a lesser extent, the UK) have not been Israel's friend to turn a blind eye when Israel behaved poorly. I couldn't disagree more with everything you've been wrong about on that list. Wow.

If you go to france, just say you are canadian. they wont give you a hard time.

They absolutely will if you act like you're travelling to Canada instead of France.

They really do welcome people who are there to experience French culture. They don't understand why anyone would bother going outside their own hometowns if not to take part in a different way of life. I have to say I agree.

I don't think a French person would take a holiday abroad without first learning something about the place they're going to. Not to blend in, not to give up their French identity, but to be able to function and to be able to appreciate the place they've gone to. They do expect the same in return. And I will say the French are not shy about their expectations.

Yeah, let's beat up on the French, because that's what Americans do! (!)

They (along with most of the sane industrialized nations) didn't support Bush's war on Iraq, so we gave ourselves "Freedom Fries."

To my knowledge the French have always "cooked" their potatoes, and apparently Americans equated their "cooked" fries as being something "French" to take away from the fact that were "fried."

This American believes that we wouldn't have won our revolution against King George III if it weren't for the French bank rolling the whole operation. To the extent that their Monarchy was overturned, and when it came to "Democracy" the French have more than a lesson or two to teach us.

France didn't support Bush43's war in Iraq, and I seem to recall that the last time that the French "encouraged" us to avoid getting involved outside of the U.S. Borders was in a place called Vietnam.

And yet current day Americans seem to think that France was NEVER a Super Power.

Perhaps it's because they don't willfully speak English.

I'm sorry. What was the topic?

Oh yeah, a part of the globe that France had once "colonized," and we're laughing because those former French Colonies don't seem to matter, even though we're supposed to be fighting a "Global War on Terror." wfte

So we continue to make fun of them, and wonder why "The French" hold Americans and "The English" with such contempt.

:grrr:
