Despite the notoriety of the Westboro Clan, I don't see it being a good expression for same sex partner empowerment anywhere.

A group of New Yorkers calling themselves The Satanic Temple paid a visit to what appears to be the grave of the mother of Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) founder Fred Phelps on Sunday, staging two same sex commitment ceremonies atop the tombstone in hopes of confronting the hate group in a manner that’s uniquely offensive to them.
One unnamed participant also “teabagged” the tombstone — slang for putting one’s testicles on something. This too was documented in high resolution.

That is disrespectful no matter who it's being done to, and people who do things like this in protest are just hurting us more than anything.

That is really really disrespectful. I think we must always take the high ground and not stoop to the levels of lesser people.

So Lucien is still alive, eh?

Is this where I say hail Satan, or do I wait to care about his "god" enough for it to matter?

(at least I know they're LGBT friendly)

I wouldn't choose to express myself in that manner.....and I have as much respect for them as I have for Phelps....when you behave like them what the hell are you protesting?

Sorry but when did reproducing the same insulting behaviour that is condemned when done by one's adversaire become something to be admired.

I'm curious. Did you read the article and the linked press release?

I have now and no my opinion hasn't changed.

They seem to think it was a clever, witty prank to get publicity; I think it is obscene and disrespectful. Exactly the same words I would use to describe Phelps' group's actions. (Have I got my apostrophes in the right places there?)

Thanks for the reply.

I'd pretty much agree with your opinion, except that I think they have an awful lot of catching up to do to be put in the same league as Fred's clan.

Still, I do like this snip from the article, and wonder if it might have more to do with what they're going for than do the staged 'marriages'.

Explaining the ceremony itself, Greaves continues, “The Satanic Temple now believes that Fred Phelps must believe that his mother is now gay, in the afterlife, due to our Pink Mass… And nobody can challenge our right to our beliefs.”

I'm truly indifferent.

I don't think corpses make good agitprop. And I don't think they have standing to be party to a debate, what with the absence of being and all that. I would smirk a bit if I learnt she was an active supporter of her son's movement.

I like the injunction to "Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." And I think Phelps should never be allowed to set the example for how we treat each other. But I do believe it is legitimate to accept his terms of engagement for how we treat his ilk.

Are you guys crazy or something!? That's awesome! They have absolutely no consideration for the ones that suffer through some ones death, sooooooo now that its happened to them, maybe they'll back off a little from knowing how hard it is.

LOL! Oh well! Westboro baptist sort of deserve it... But it could have been done in a more tasteful way. After all, what did the woman do? She only gave birth to an asshole!

I have mixed feelings/thoughts concerning cemeteries.

But, I suppose this is what it really comes down to in this situation - if I'm reading you right.

Sort of like how sometimes it's necessary to set control fires (is that what they call them?) ahead of a larger fire to stop its spreading.

I heard on the news the other day they were planning on doing their usual protest crap at that Glee Kid's funeral.
