Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Did you, even read my proposal?

Yes, I did, and I find it difficult to understand why you are defending him. That's like saying that Hitler murdered millions of Jews in order to make the world aware of their plight.

If you haven't seen this interview with Shirley Phelps, I recommend that you do so.

EDIT: Do you really think this 'person' is on our side?

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

No. The answer is no. The answer was no before I read the train of thought. It is no still..

I have watched that video many times. It's one of the things that made me think Shirley is in on it.

Your analogy of Hitler is flawed. He killed millions of Jews. All the Phelps have ever done is swayed more and more public opinion for us by showing people the true face of bigotry.

While you're all worried about what you can clearly see in the Phelps, mega xtian churches with their hundreds of millions of dollars are the ones doing the real damages by funneling millions into anti gay rights campaigns while being politically correct.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

I have to second that question.

I was okay with his proposal, but I wasn't okay with the way that he really started believing it as fact and trying to defend the actions of the WBC and trying to convince me that Fred and his clan were on our side.

LOL

True enough. A truly noble man would have managed to leave the kids out of it.

Fair enough.

Again, did you not read where I said I don't consider this fact? See post 16.

Your rebuttal amounts to something like this.

Allied forces pretends to build up forces in north Africa to let the Germans believe they will land in Italy or Greece. Everyone in berman command sees the build up in forces in north Africa and agrees the allied will attack the south. General A proposes that perhaps it's a deception. General B is so outraged that anyone could even propose such a thing when the allied are clearly building up forces in north Africa.

Do you see my point? If FP meant to caricaturize the bigot position, it would only work if he didn't hold anything back. Otherwise there's no point.

In the end, it's all a theory on my part. No need to lose sleep over it.

Well, would you agree that people wouldn't be so turned off by the Phelps had there not been kids involved? I think the kids have been a major factor in swaying so many people our way.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Anyone here remember the Jesus camp video? There have been many videos about xtian extremists and crazies, but people just dismiss them as religious worship. But public opinion was so overwhelmingly against that camp because it involved kids that the camp had to close.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Yes, I did, but your other posts indicate otherwise. You are trying to convince me that your theory is correct and that my theory that Phelps was a greedy, money-grubbing hate-monger is wrong.

Meanwhile, you have completely ignored my questions to you.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Absolutely not.

Maybe. I think it was bad enough without them that people got turned off. What really turned people against them wasn't the involvement of kids, but totally out-of-bounds slogans like "Thank God for dead soldiers".

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

If Phelps really was the monster he appeared to be, then he unintentionally sent a lot of people our way. If my theory is right about him, then he really did send a lot of people our way. Regardless of if it was intentional or not, he sent a lot of people our way. I dare say public opinion would still be overwhelmingly against us had Phelps not show them what a monster face looked like.

I don't understand why you say "If" when it is clear that you believe this without considering the other factors that could play a part in it not being true. And it is a silly one because there are and have been others like him that are extreme "religious" nut jobs that spout off the same if not worse stuff. So even if you believe your theory, presenting him as a deciding factors in changing peoples opinions is a bit ignorant to say the least.

Civil rights and ignorance didn't exist when Fred Phelps came into the picture and strides were made way before his time when he wasn't around.

No, I'm not. I fully recognize that it's a far fetch theory. What I don't like is the reason you use to dismiss it off hand.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Zombiekiller, you're more impressed with your own self-perceived intellect than looking into more details about Fred Phelps' life. It wasn't an act. Fred Phelps is well documented to being a mentally ill man who physically and psychologically abused his family and children. Clearly, you didn't look into the interviews of his estranged family where Phelps' private life mirrored the hate of his public one:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/...s-Childhood-Abuse-At-The-Hands-Of-His-Father#

"“He had this old barber’s strap and used it so much that the last six inches were frayed, kind of like a cat-o-nine-tails, and he’d hit you with it and it’d wrap around your hips and rip the skin. By the time I turned eight I remember he had started using a mattock handle instead. Similar to a pickaxe handle, it was about 4ft long and bigger than a baseball bat.” Nate says his father would fly into rages and beat him and his siblings mercilessly: “Then he’d set the mattock down and hit them with his fist.”

Because beating your children with a frayed barber's strap to reverse psychology the homophobes makes soooo much sense.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

^ This.

It doesn't take a genius to go to the theory that all monsters just do what they do in order to help the people they are hurting.

But it is a jejune hypothesis at best and a dangerous means of diminishing and rationalizing their evil deeds at worst.

Next zombie will be engaging in speculation that Hitler was only trying to help the Jews.

Phelps is dead. His 'Church' is dying. Family members are fleeing the cult one after another and the ones that remain will one day drink the Kool-Aid.

He didn't see this when I wrote it a few posts back. I doubt if he will see it now.

That's why I'm done with this nonsense.

Now wait a minute, zombie may be on to something. maybe all those people who bomb abortion clinics are actually pro-choice. Makes perfect sense doesn't it? Nobody wants to be associated with a bomber. So they kill a few people, destroy tens of thousands of dollars worth of property and, voila, you probably haven't changed any minds but at least you made a strong pro-choice statement. "Right to choose or bust."
