And yes, freedom of speech is selective on JUB, just as it is in Canada and the U.S. Here, it's governed by the COC. If you're confused about that, it's to your left.

the lesson about this thread is that there is a positive and a negative to everything. the 2nd amendment allows people to bear arms, this includes the people that shouldn't be allowed to own guns. the 1st amendment protects free speech, the right to protest, and etc. i forgot WHAT it doesn't protect BUT it does protect some things people may be offended by such as WBC, KKK, neo nazis, noi, hate groups, and etc.

I'm quite aware of the CoC, and I know where it is. In fact, I've read it. However, his comments weren't, in my mind, a personal attack. They were observations which are shared by more than one person here. If you think it's a personal attack, report it and let the mods figure it out.

At least twice in this thread you have contradicted yourself. You've been 'screaming' (not literally) 'freedom of speech' in one sentence and limiting it in the next. If you're such a proponent of it, it should be for everyone, any time, anywhere. No restrictions. No limits. But even you can't abide by that. Hence, I don't think that you even believe it yourself.

I think the worst thing about this and nobody has mentioned it is that harm is done to the families just by the threat of this happening.

Imagine what they must be going through, having just lost their children, they must be in a hell of a state of depression already, and to add to that they now have the threat the Phelps may turn up hanging over them. They don't even need to show up the damage is already done. Often agonising over a problem is more troublesome than the actual problem itself, will the Phelps show? Will they make enough noise to be heard? Will there be violence because of their presence? Will this be a peaceful ceremony?

It's absolutely ridiculous this even needs to be debated.

gsdx, I find JB's personal attacks an annoyance. Instead of debating the merits of the proposition at hand, he's focusing his attention on me. What does my so-called pedantry and domineering attitude (observations shared by others, thanks) have to do with a real discussion of freedom of speech? What do my supposedly icy veins have to do with regulation of liberties? The answer is, nothing. You and others may dislike my opinion, but it's irritating that we can't discuss that, and not myself.

I don't think I've responded in kind, making characterizations of JB or yourself, please note.

I'm not sure why you think I should believe that as a proponent of free speech I must adhere to a complete lack of restrictions on it. It may be mildly complicated to recognize that our liberty to speech isn't absolute, but that's hardly a contradiction.

The Phelps family plans to protest outside the funerals of murdered children. Most of this think this is cruel, cruel, cruel, to the point of sadism.

But a few blind idealists insist that it's the Phelps' right to practice their Freedom of Speech. Never mind anti-bullying laws, never mind "intentional infliction of emotional distress" laws, never mind...

....never mind the sheer, abject agony of the victims.

I find that sentiment appalling, and callous to the nth degree.

And that's all I have to say.

Thus, I still assert that Pussy Riot, Russian nationals, never had the "right" to freedom of speech. Heck, not many countries do. How SCOTUS could rule the way they did is baffling.
