Soilwork is probably right: there probably never will be a cure for those already infected, just as there will probably never be a cure for herpes. The virus hides out in places were it eludes detection by the immune system, which means even a vaccine would likely be ineffective on those already infected. It might buy a little more time prior to the initiation of HAART, and help minimize the dosing of those incredibly toxic drugs.

We are right to focus research money on creating a vaccine to prevent new infections. However, we'll still get more bang for out buck out of education and prevention.

HIV is a lot like TB, from a public health perspective. Prior to the advent of antibiotics, we were actually winning the war on TB by addressing the conditions that gave rise to it. Those laws about how many people can occupy a housing unit, it's ventilation, etc. -- those are all enlightened public health initiatives aimed at erradicating TB. Then antibiotics came along, TB was thought 'curable', we let our guard down, and now we have serveral resistant strains out there.

With HIV, we are even a better position than we were with TB: we know exactly how it is spread. It is among the most fastidious of viruses. The way to eradicate it is through education and easy access to barrier contraception, needle exchange programs. Unfortunately the world moral police, from the Religious Right as home, who still mistake sex education for sex promotion, and the Catholic Church worldwide, which still insists that contraception of any kind is a mortal sin (and yet promote the 'rhythm method', which differs from conventional contraception only in efficacy, not in intent?!) would thwart our efforts every step of the way. end of tirade.

Yeah, that was sarcasm and not intended to be an ofense, what I really meant is that to get a cure, vaccine, etc. fighting for it is useless, that won't speedup biological investigation, medical research, testing, fda aproval, etc. If you support bareback it's ok for me, but be aware of risks, and don't think that wishing for a solution hard enough will get you any results.

Fighting for FUNDING may increase the chances of better treatment, vaccine research, etc. That's not really as much of a fool's errand as you think.

And while I certainly don't have a problem with advocating for safer sex, I DO have a problem with Soilwork's idea that it's wrong even to have bareback FANTASIES. Some of us started having sex in the precondom era, and that's the way we're wired.

Tell us not to have bareback sex. Tell us not to buy bareback porn. Do NOT tell us not to have bareback THOUGHTS. For heaven's sake, thinking about our favorite pornstar taking it bare doesn't endanger ANYONE. If you don't want to participate, go away.

Well funding is quite high, just take into consideration that whoever gets a vaccine is sure to rott in money. So private sources are giving funds. True its a risk to invest in such things, in case nothing comes out of reaserch. Still I see your point, but that is not enough to feel good with yourself. I have honestly come to believe that bareback porn promotes/glamorizes bareback sex. The few Cobra clips I've seen make it appear hot to let your partner cum in your ass.

And yes, at present he remains more meretricious than meritorious: his circumstances have yet to provided him with the bourgeois luxury of cultivating a finer moral intelligence, and I admit I'm not terribly optimistic about his outcome so long as he continues doing porn and defining his ego primarily in terms of his twinkie tush. But I'd like to be pleasantly surprised: he has a good head on his shoulders.

I suppose my point is that, as much as I like looking at the Fratmen, I'm sure a lot of them, like frat guys in general, can be MAJOR assholes! I know. I wouldn't call what Soil does 'spamming', as he is giving us pictures many of us enjoy 'looking' at While he is promoting 'Fratmen', it's definitely a wash.

I was actually hoping to get some feedback on my belief that bareback porn promotes/encourages/glamorizes bareback sex. I think the HIV status of the models is immaterial; I think it is incumbant upon producers to use porn to promote safe sex.

Personally, I don't see how what 'Treasure Island' does is any different than a snuff film.
