Soil, I realize that you have very mixed feelings about BC, and they are entirely justified. However, I'm still inclined to see him as an exploited kid, who saw his tush as his only ticket out of a dreadful family situ. I also think you underestimate the power of early experience. When I came out, and until well after college, condoms were a thing only straight people used, ever. I've accepted the necessity of using them (most of my gay friends from college are dead; I escaped because I was nerdy, not because I was careful), but it's a strong impairment to the erotic. NONE of my fantasies have condoms in them. NONE of my fantasies have HIV/AIDS or any other disease in them either.

I suspect (correct me if I'm wrong) that you came out into a world that already had AIDS in it. You think of condoms as part of the basic routine of sex, like lube, and barebacking as a "why would anyone do that" kind of thing, the way I think of fisting (which is bloody dangerous, choosing words carefully).

OK, I think this thread is on the border. "Who would you like to see take it bareback" is ambiguous. I took it to mean "who do you fantasize about taking it bare" not "who do you think we should engage in a campaign to get him to take it bare." Could be either. I'm sorry, but that's incorrect. Fisting is, in its way, every bit as life threatening as barebacking. It's not a way to get HIV, that's true.

But every time a guy takes a fist, he's incurring a small but significant risk that his sigmoid colon (which is the consistency of wet paper towels, and not the "rinse-and-reuse" kind either) will be torn. There are no nerve endings there, and so he can't feel that happen, or start to happen. Unless someone is really on the ball and recognizes the symptoms (and fisting is a favorite of the PNP set, who aren't known for their alertness), he could bleed to death internally before he gets to the hospital.

So no, they're not the same. Barebacking puts you at a small but significant risk of dying horribly years from now. Fisting puts you at a small but significant risk of dying horribly tonight.

If you believe in always practicing safer sex, fisting needs to go in the same trash can as barebacking--except that barebacking in a committed monogamous relationship can be safe, and fisting is risky no matter who you do it with.

I'm well aquainted with both the gross and histological compostion of sigmoid mucosa and muscularis. Fisting carries about the same risk of peritonitis as colonoscopy, and is probably less than severe consitpation/volvulus requiring manual disimpaction (i've done it: my advice is to pull out your hand quickly, stand back, and hold your nose! (sigmoid volvulus = ballistic shit)

Of course while peritonitis secondary to a colon ruputred by fisting (or a colonoscope) is a life-threateining medical emergency, it is, unlike HIV, curable, though will require definitive surgical closure. It is the equivalent of a ruptured appendix or sigmoid diverticuli. However unlike most ruptured diverticuli, which are typically surrounded by a region of frank necrotic tissue, it will not require resection and colostomy -- just a simple repair of the defect, tho' i would send a sample to pathology to see if the rupture at that point was due to a neoplasm. Common things are common, after all. If cold section negative, rinse the gut out with bug juice prior to closure. Parenteral Abx tx (Keflex vs. Zosin) shoud contain the infection and protect against bacteremia/sepsis. keep an eye on the white count. If no rebound tenderness on PE after first post-op flatulance, it's probably okay to switch to PO Augmentin. Get an upright KUB just to make sure there's no air under the diaphragm, PTD. Then get 'em outta the ward and off of my fuckin' service! Discharge note: afeb, VSS, FU appt in a week. Yes, that's how we practice medicine in America.

Bareback isn't in the same league as watersport, s&m, or even those german 'kaviar' movies in which Cartman's mom supposedly preformed ('essen mein scheize!') It really does put one in harms way, and in the most emergent sense of that term. That's why I consider it little better than snuff porn.

Oh, I'm with you there! About a decade ago, Berkeley law professor Catherine McKinnon caught a lot of flack for her ascertation that porn promoted violence against women by constantly depicting them in submissive/degrading situations. I agreed with her then, and I agree with her even more now. I can't think of anything more degrading than having unprotected sex with a stranger who might very well be giving you a lethal disease.

As I said above, I think it is incumbant upon everybody working in the adult industry both to educate on safe sex techniques, and to demonstrate that safe sex is hot sex. We have a far better chance of getting ahead of this virus through enlightened and realistic policy than by pinning our hopes on what promises to be an elusive cure. And as the gay community was the first to be hit, I think it is important for us to take the lead in prevention. Until recently, we were doing a pretty good job of it.

Do you realize that WHO officials reckon that papal interference with distribution of condoms in sub-saharan Africa may be responsible for over a million deaths, and ten million infections? I'd have free condoms in every hamlet in Africa, and I wouldn't think twice about nuking the Vatican if that's what it took to save these lives.
