  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Fuckin' help me! No comedy central!

Anybody who understands my tongue-in-cheek manner will understand what I meant IF they've been watching BET for as long as I have. Back in the day BET had educational programming for black youth about stds, sex, pregnancy, education, and things that mattered. The music was a variety of jazz, carribbean, soul, gospel, and REAL rap.

BET today (since it's owened by MTV's parent corp. Viacom) is a mirror of MTV. The programming is shallow and only promotes misogynistic gangster rap, loud ghetto black people, and horny college kids. There's no balance, no educational programming, and the BET awards is a joke because the same artists perform every year, Neyo, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Ciara, etc... BET as it is now represents everything the old BET used to criticize. I'm not the only person who feels this way, lots of people feel that BET has collapsed and now fails to accurately depict and appeal to the modern black American, unless all they care about is bling-bling and booty-shakin' and and gangsters.

don't get me wrong...i agree with you about BET's content. just thought your statement was kind of disrespectful(is that the right spelling...looks weird) and somehow i think if you'd come across someone ELSE making a statement like that you'd have said alot more than i did about it.

I think that a TV channel aimed at a particular race is racist.

It imediately creates an illusion that whatever that channel shows represents that race.
Hmmmm, no. By your standards, we shouldn't have any gay channels or movies. Seeing how that is sexist and heterophobic. Excluding the straights like that. Shame!

Because marley's black he would have responded in an offended black manner willsboy? BET is a joke. As a white male who used to watch several music networks I thought the lineup on BET was much better than it is now. BET in the afternoon focuses on Soulja Boy and artists who are not really all that talented. Because it appears to be what is popular at the moment, they make it out so that it becomes modern society. The societal impact it has is far greater than you could imagine when millions of people view that channel a day.

Real life does not involve bling-bling alone. And BET openly has advertisements promoting sexual congress between teenagers with such lines as,"Get Your Freak On This Spring Break With Artists like..." I've seen plenty of AIDs awareness promos years before.

The latest Alicia Keys video starts with a pep rally about AIDs in Africa. Halfway through the intro the male character stops caring what the protest is about or how many people see him STARE at Alicia Keys.

It went from AIDs to damn gurl gimme dat azz.

See what I mean?

AGAIN, i'm not CONDONING anything on Bet...usually don't bother with it my damn self. my point is that if a comment of that nature had been made by someone else, Marley would've lost his damn mind. and Marls, i love u....REALLY i do, but you know damn well it's true.

^I think it's time we get Marley a cooky PR agent like in Hancock.

Jeebus fucking Christ calm down I wasn't asking for relief donations or the National Reserve, it was a light-hearted thread. Calm down, breathe, step away from the keyboard until you learn not to take everything so seriously.

Especially when it's one of the few channels that doesn't go around kissing everybody's ass.

Don't bother despensing your endless parade of useless advice to me as I have zero interest the blather of those so in love with their own words.

FUCK!!! we're such a bunch of drama queens!!!

But any shows that are aimed for a certain raicial or cultural group can be played on any channel, they dont need their own channel.

Lets set the picture. Here is a channel that is made for black people. The channel shows what it thinks back people like to watch. Now heres some possible scenarios of what can happen:

1) Black person watches the channel and likes it

2) White person watches the channel and likes it

3) Black person watches the channel and doesnt like it for whatever reason, or doesnt watch the cannel at all.

4) Either person from 1 and 2 can walk up to person 3 and say 'Hey, you must like watching this TV channel / listening to this music / interested in this stuff because you are black'.

5) Person 3 gets offended because this is racial prejudice.

This same thing has happened here on this thread with someone assuming that Marley should watch this channel because he is black.

A TV channel like this wouldnt be allowed in the UK for similar reasons to these. A program or channel is not allowed to cater to a particular race here, they can only cater to religion or language, but not 'Here is a channel for people with Black Skin' because it unintentially can fuel racism.

We would have people saying 'Why do black people need their own TV channel, what is any different about ours', which is the same argument that is running throughout the country with religious schools. Any TV show that is aimed at a certain social group must also be aimed at people of all races in that group, otherwise it wouldnt be allowed on TV.
How do I put this into words. My brain is frazzled right now, but I am going to try.

The scenarios you just layed out can be associated with MTV. Say they have a show geered towards black people, now attach that list. The same thing. So should no show center solely on one race or culture? But if they did that, then people would still get mad. And people have gotten mad at MTV for that. They joke and some get legitimately angry about the tolken one black guy/girl on Real World, or the random black guy peppered into all their shows.

The thing a channel geared towards a single race does, is give those people a strong sense of pride in their race. BET wasn't always like the crap it is now. At one point, they had incredibly intelligent shows on the show that showed black people, and black youth in a great light. It had programs that truely helped, then suddenly it descended bellow MTV's level, and now I would sign the petition to have it taken off the air personally.

Such programs, would never find themselves on regular channels. They would be random "specials" and probably grossly mismanaged by the producers of the "special"

The person you described in scenario 4 is a fucking idiot, and would be a very isolated incident. You shouldnt let one idiot deter the potential of a great channel. BET used to be a great channel. Now it is trash that I feel is hurting the black community. That Boondocks episode might be a joke, but it is so spot on in what it is saying.

No matter how intelligent a person is, it doesn't mean they won't have preconcieved notions about people. That is just part of being a human. You can't let her engaging in stereotyping affect you.

But similarly, with this channel BET, if you are allowed to have a Black Entertainment Channel, then where is the White Entertainment channel? What would people think if there was a channel just for white people?
Every other channel is White Entertainment Television. Most primetime shows are geared towards white middle class America. I know you are in Britian, but I am just using American primetime television as an example.

Television companies of course hope that the other minorities will get into it, but they see the dollar signs attached directly the heads of white middle class people. It just can't be helped. Because of this, you will find minority groups aren't fully represented in the media, or get little 20/20 specials about things going on in their lives. And those shows aren't even aimed at minority groups still. I would rather have a BET (no matter how utterly shitty) than having that bozo Al Sharpton on his soapbox complaining black people aren't being represented in the media.

This also takes me back to when I was asked by a random Indian guy on campus if I knew where the Indian club was. I actually replied to him 'Why would I be interested in an Indian club?' and he thought it was because I was Indian. I am ethnically Indian yes, but I dont look any different to anyone from any country in the the Indian sub continent, and I also identify myself as British and avoid Indian only social groups like the plague.

When I bought this story up with my white friends, one of them actually put a great perspective on it - 'Well, why exactly do they need an Indian group? What is wrong with us? Is there something wrong with talking to us? So if they can have an Indian only group is it ok for me to have a white only group? Wouldn't that be racist?'
The purpose of ethnic groups is to let people of the same race or culture to get together and possibly have discussions about their history, their historical country of origin, or just help people of their own race in the community. If you are a British Indian who doesn't know a lot about Indian culture, you can go to these groups and learn a little bit about your historical background. More than what you would learn in a two week section on India.

The government tries to help as much as they can with all communities, but they also have to worry about other stuff. So an ethnic group takes up the slack and help the people that need help. It isn't meant to be racist or exclusive.

I am a black man, but I was in the Filipino Asian American Association, and they didn't care for half a second. The teacher sponser was white himself. Our African American Association had white people in it. They weren't even South African. It is just a place where people can go to listen to get a taste of the historical meaning, music, food behind the culture. I doubt a regular group of people really want to sit around and listen to some authentic indian music or even learn about a country they have no connection to.

So that brings up the same question - Why would Black people need their own TV channel, what is wrong with others? Racial pride?

From Racial pride comes racial supremecy, the belief that your race is better then others, and both of these are unfavored and wouldn't be allowed in Britain under our law which fully promotes equality and no differences between people of different races.
Why do we need country borders? Why do we have such things (in America at least) as Black History Month?

Your taking something harmless to an extreme. None of these groups, well the majority promote cultural superiority. These groups don't concern themselves with others. It is to give you pride in your races culture, where you wont find it from other races. My school had a white cultural club. It was centered around people of historical European descent, but it existed, and no one cried racism or "white supremacy."

On a related note,

Here in Snobasota, folks in the ultra-rich, ultra-white parts of town were so aghast that BET was offered on their cable grids that they complained to Comcast about it en masse.

After it was explained to them that they could simply block out the channel themselves, that still wasn't good enough. So, Comcast came out and delivered special cable boxes to their houses with BET 'pre-deleted' for them, thus sparing folks the potential horror of actually glimpsing the offending channel.

I wish I was making this up. :(

The sad part is that it's not only believable, but I feel foolish for not thinking something like this hasn't happened. That's a bit more overt but I think in Cum.Slave's case he just doesn't fully grasp the concept of culture. The word wouldn't exist if we were all the same.
I am having a hard time trying to explain the importance of culture, and pride in your culture. I feel like Cum_Slave is somewhat ashamed of his cultural background. I mean I have gone through that phase. I was in the Filipino club, but not in the African American club. But I even then, I have still had a small pride in african culture. Not so much, black american culture, beyond the days of MLK.

That Bollywood routine on So You Think You Can Dance was awesome. I will post it once it appears on Youtube.
