I definitely get the difference between the two. To me the best is *both* -- a nice, slow warm-up with emphasis on tenderness, kissing, caring for the other partner (the making love part) -- that slowly segues before you know it into a good fuck (more emphasis on hard, urgent, demanding strokes and less on tenderness, caring) -- that winds back down to making love again.

To me that's the ultimate. There are others times when I'm all about the fuck. And then there are other times when I'm all about making love and never want to escalate into primal fucking.

I think it's nearly impossible to make love with a stranger. To put it another way, if you're making love with someone, then they're not a stranger even if you just met them. Making love requires an emotional connection that strangers don't have.

On the other hand, anonymous sex with strangers is all about fucking.

I'd probably go for a mixture of both.

I like the idea of both a hard fuck, and an intense passionate love making session.

It's interesting how "fucking" and " making love" is linguistically different in its essence. While fucking is an action by itself, that does not involve a determined end, making love its something that has already a certain creation or end, that is "love", you make, create something, you could even say that you make something real from the world of ideas.
Considering that nerdy and boring introduction (that's the way I am so I can't help it), I'd rather choose making love, but I completely reject its linguistic concept, because making love sounds to me like making babies, or poop, or something, like the need of making something concrete beyond the sexual act.
Sex by itself, and sexuality by itself implicates a lot of things, that do not require to make something more real than the reality of foreplay, sex, and after-sex.
And fucking, emm, okok I like the idea, but the romantic and psychologic (and not linguistic) concept of making love is what I really want for me (I'm a virgin). =)
