That is progressive prejudice at work against religious prejudice: assuming people were generally less clever, enlightened... more gullible because of the general condition of their civilization and its intellectual and technical social layers... but societies are generally virtually the same in all ages, and just like there are "goat-header-minded" people now like 2000 or 4000 years ago, the cleverer ones, as that quip shows, are just as gullible about their own intelligence and awareness as the ones who are comparatively below them.
