You mean it's silly to you. For most of human history, the idea of getting to choose who you marry was silly -- to all those people.

That doesn't make it silly in and of itself.

Ahh, nice recourse to moral relativism.

I'm willing to say that getting to choose who you marry is objectively less silly than having no consent, or having your choice constrained by considerations other than what the two people concerned decide to bring to each other and accept from each other.

For most of human history, most people have been silly about a lot of things.

I'm afraid that doesn't make any more sense. The whole idea of penalty calculus is just a bit silly.
