Its very funny and not even necessarily anti-religious. The St. Matthew-in-the-City Anglican church in Auckland has put up at least two similarly themed billboards during the Christmas season intended to get people thinking about the realities of the Christmas story.

Hard to follow.jpg
The first dealing with the same message as above, Joseph dealing with Mary being pregnant with a child that was not his but loving her enough to marry her anyway and accept that child.

Positive.jpg
The second dealing with what Mary must have thought when she realized she was pregnant. Both of these were intended to generate some honest discussion of the Christmas story but caused a lot of outrage and even vandalism against the church.

I always find the Anglicization of these characters a real hoot.

Just look at those rosy cheeks – and there even seems to be a touch of ginger in Mary's blond hair. Maybe she didn't leave the peroxide on long enough. :)

This reminds me of something I stumbled on the other day I'd never found before: one of the arguments in the young church for not making any images of Jesus was that no matter how He was depicted it would be wrong, and therefore blasphemous.

And therefore a sin! And sin is wonderful; the Church has always thrived on sin! One must have sin in order to be able to repent, and one must repent in order to make the young church profitable!

They must have held art classes! Draw Jesus nude, from a life model! Or, say, from a relic of the holy foreskin. Just extrapolate the rest. But fear not; it will be sin, and the need for repentance will thus augment!
