Garbage picking....

i only garbage pick during last call at a gay bar

ooohhhh those lights can be viscious

I should just go ugly early

it would save alot of time

I wouldn't say garbage, more like things they didn't want any more

I'm ashamed to admit that I did in my youth. !oops! I lived in a housing development that had quite a few rental properties for the local college students. You would be amazed at the amount of stuff they would throw out at the end of the year becase they don't want to haul it home for the summer. In fact my first ever look at porn was what I found in the dumpster thrown out by all the frat boys. It was all str8 porn of course until one day I found a Hustler magazone and then a Playgirl magazine. I was more interested in look at cock than clam.

The only thing I garbage picked were some outdoor chairs that my one neighbor put out. The old metal ones that kinda rock when you sit in them. I couldn't resist.

It always amazes me though, put old furniture or appliances out and within 30 minutes.....they disappear.

oh golly yes... all the time when i was little... my parents would take us all out and we would search by driving around till we find something useful... my dad would pick bicycles and lawnmowers and then restore them and sell them or give them away as a hobby... i'm actually sitting in a chair right now that my mom nabbed out of the garbage.. of course... i refused to sit in it when she brought it home till i had thoroughly cleaned it ..|

My what a coincidence :) Today as I was bringing my nephew home from school, I spied a sewing machine setting by a trash can. After thirty minutes of oiling and fiddling with it, I have a perfectly working Kenmore Sewing machine. I even sewed a button on one of my favorite shirts with it.

Twice a year the city does a trash pickup. Everybody leaves their unwanteds by the curb, then everybody gets in their pickup and drives around checking out everybody else's unwanteds. I've seen women in "dress for success" suits and pantyhose picking through piles of trash on their lunch hour.

No, we ain't white trash -- but damn them trash piles is irresistible. I got a nice little table for my patio that way.

I wouldn't say picking... but frequently on Big Garbage Day (once a year our local garbage company does a major pickup in each neighborhood), I will take a little walk and peer into my neighbors' piles. There's something about a big pile of domestic refuse that draws my curiosity, I'm always intrigued by what people throw away.

The only time I ever took anything away from such a pile was when I found a box of "Classics Club" books that someone had tossed because of water-damage... a Whitman, a Milton, two volumes of Proust, a Virgil and an Ovid were all that I could salvage from the mildew.

^^^ Thanks for reminding Comtesse, I too have found books including an unabridged dictionary!

Me & my friends have once before; and because of it, we found a decent collection of videos.. but apart from that, not at all..

I ALWAYS give the trash a quick once over as I drive past. It's phenomental what people part with sometimes..... Amongst my best finds.... 8 identically sized vintage suitcases which became sweet little side tables. A 72" wide antique panel of spindle work (used to ba a transom in an old Victorian house that was being defaced...er, renovated) which has become a stunning headboard. 4 carved solid wood doors dating to 1903 which bacame an amazing headboard/footboard set. a series of antique cast and wrought iron bridge lamps which I stripped, had re-plated and re-wired.

Stuff in the garbage usually needs to be re-thought, but WOW the amazing one-of-a-kind treasures you can get!

There was an old refrigerator sitting at the end of a driveway near where I live. The sign on it that said FREE. I remember passing it a couple of times and wondered why no one snatched it up. I drove by a day or two latter and the sign was changed to $50 and it was gone within the hour. Humans are a weird bunch aren't we?

I still find myself driving past a house the day after a garage sale to see what treasures I will find at the curb. I, also, like to rework some of my 'finds' into new unique articles. I have a floor lamp made from the legs of an old wooden surveyor's tripod. I once made a set of end tables from a set of old wooden children's appliances. And old hand held utensils make great wall decorations in the kitchen. I even add some silk flowers to some of it.

as they say One man's trash is another man's treasure
