Gas $7 Per Gallon in Four Years

Petrol is @ $4+/gallon here in the SF bay area. Yet there are enormous numbers of cars on the road; all driving at 80mph. WTF?

Why are all of these people on the road. I hardly drive at all. When I do get on the road; can't I have it to myself?

Apparently not! :(

I believe we'll see $7 in the not-too-distant future. But people love to complain about gas prices, even though they don't do anything real to solve it.

I hope US will build a bicycle lane, the road in Indiana is too narrow to bike riders.

I don't drive enough to worry about it since I'm always at work. I probably fill my car up once a month if that. NOW - the thing that DOES kill me is how the price of gas is effecting my airline business. We've had like 6 airlines go out of business in the last month. More are to come. It's really causing problems for us. If gas keeps going up to 200 a barrel, I don't know what is gonna happen. We can barely stay afloat now! :(:(:(

I remember reading that some people were estimating that airline travel will change. The average person will do it less often. We will not need as many airlines unless they can find another more inexpensive way to get enough energy for planes. Wealthy people will still probably travel as much but the poor probably will not and the middle class will do it less. I read that on one of the peak oil web site a while back. Of course, who knows what will really happen....we will just have to wait an see I guess or come up with a better technology.

Actually, they are working on some things:

Lets move to New Zealand

I totally hate public transportation

This is all manufactured BS. Yes, sure, peak oil and all of that. As for the cost of petrol? Hedge funds are diving our current inflation.

What saps we public are!

Sap here,

Please explain and show the proof. I'm not a financial analysts and I really don't understand what hedge funds have to do with this.

Thanks.

I've got a horse and a bicycle.....between the two I should make it. :gogirl:

I'd seriously LOVE to ride my bike to and from work. I'd drop the weight I need to very quickly and it'd be a lot cheaper AND it'd be better for the environment.

Too bad my town doesn't have very good bike paths. #-o People around here drive like maniacs and I'd probably end up getting run over.

7 dollar gas price is going to hurt the world economy, it doesn't matter where you want to move.
maybe you can consider moving to oil importing countries like Saudi Arabia.

^^ I get what you're saying.

But the fact is...America is a wasteful country, becoming less resourceful and independent as the years go on. If the gas will be that expensive, I wonder how much the cost of living will increase.

$7 a gallon? Nope, I'd rather catch the city bus. I've started that already. :)

It seems the $7/ gallon may be low.

Gasoline to cost $10 a gallon in US soon?

Posted by Mark Frauenfelder, April 28, 2008 11:15 AM | permalink

The New York Sun reports that the price of gasoline in the US will soon be in line with what Europeans pay.
Translating this price into dollars and cents at the gas pump, one of our forecasters, the chairman of Houston-based Dune Energy, Alan Gaines, sees gas rising to $7-$8 a gallon. The other, a commodities tracker at Weiss Research in Jupiter, Fla., Sean Brodrick, projects a range of $8 to $10 a gallon.

While $7-$10 a gallon would be ground-breaking in America, these prices would not be trendsetting internationally. For example, European drivers are already shelling out $9 a gallon (which includes a $2-a-gallon tax).

Early last year, with a barrel of oil trading in the low $50s and gasoline nationally selling in a range of $2.30 to $2.50 a gallon, Mr. Gaines — in an impressive display of crystal ball gazing — accurately predicted oil was $100-bound and that gasoline would follow suit by reaching $4 a gallon.

His latest prediction of $200 oil is open to question, since it would undoubtedly create considerable global economic distress. Further, just about every energy expert I talk to cautions me to expect a sizable pullback in oil prices, maybe to between $50 and $70 a barrel, especially if there's a global economic slowdown.
While Mr. Gaines thinks there could be a temporary decline in the oil price, he's convinced an overall uptrend is unstoppable. In fact, he thinks his $200 forecast could be conservative, and that perhaps $250 could be reached. His reasoning: a combination of shrinking supply and increasing demand, especially from China, India, and America.

in time they will drop with hopes i love driving way too much i remember when i started driving 10 bucks would almost fill my baby up R.I.P i miss her

Down here in South Florida, the cheapest gas in my area is 3.60, which for me is way too much. I drive a 2000 honda civic, which is really good. It doesnt take much to fill the tank. But now i stay home and really think about going out. Its insane, I mean everything is going up and the pay is the same.

Ok so remember when we were all kids and we all asked that question..."if you were a superhero what power would you want?" Well back then I'm sure I wanted something crazy like wolverine claws but now... I want to FLY! Shit gas prices are getting ridiculous that flying seems like the only solution lol

Buying a fuel efficient car won't solve the issue. Because you still have to buy everything else that is going to skyrocket because of rising fuel costs to ship and freight it over to your shopping centers, grocery stores, and mailbox.

It's horrific. It really is.

It does look bad on one hand. But we all knew it had to eventually happen. It is not like there were not any warnings. The problem is we did not plan for it. We as Americans did not push our governement to make sure that we were prepared and our government officials chose to mostly ignore it because it was the politically safe thing to do...just like the way they handle our health care issues as well.

Standard of living is probably actually going to drop in the US. The World only has so many resources, other countries are using more and more as well, cheap energy is decreasing, and we are stuck with a lot of debt right now.

However, there may be some good things that can come out of it, including, making the US be more environmetnally responsible and energy efficient, a push for more clean energy technology, more mass transit options, a major slowdown of urban sprawl, having more people live closer to where they work (improves the quality of their life), possibly (in some cases) making locally made goods more competitive with foreign goods. Imagine if we could push clean energy technology as fast as technology in the computer industry advances. Maybe what we need is to get those high tech excecs to focus on clean energy technologies. Consumption per person will probably also decrease. Hopefully that will mean people will focus more on quality than how cheap (disposable) it is.

so enlighten us on how to solve the problem then, what do you suggest people do?

I don't complain about the prices, yes I am unhappy about them, but still don't complain about them, it doesn't do any good. I do know that when it hits 5.00 my car keys get hung up. we are coming into the summer months, so walking /riding a bike to work and where needed will be how I solve the problem.
