My friend is wanting to take me out to a couple gay bars tomorrow night and I have NO idea what to expect...
Any advice? Are they how they are stereotypically shown as? What to do, not to do? I've never been to a bar period, but wanna try it out...

Gay bars, like gay men, come in a variety of flavours. Just be confident and have fun with your friend. The one's in Sydney are little different to straight bars except the music is camper and there's more glitter.

Just have fun. I've been to gay bars that were extremely "stereotypical" and others indistinguishable from any straight bar. Either way, just let go and have blast.

Most of them are bars with gay men in them.

Others are fetish-meeting places, often with a dark room.

I have only ever been to one gay bar that I enjoyed... and it closed. I'm biased though, I don't drink more than once every month or two... I can't dance for shit, I don't like the sleazy pick up factor of the bar... I tell guys really politely, "Sorry, I'm married to this guy here," and they ask if we would both be interested in going home with them... I'm just not into it at all.

My husband loves them. He loves to dance. He loves karaoke. He's far better at ignoring trolls than I.

It's really just a matter of personal taste. But you'll never know unless you try.

Just to give a quick update, I went down to gay area in downtown Houston and went to a regular bar and then a club.
The bar was so so because most of the people there were with their own circle of friends and not really mingling. Then at the club was a completely different experience, loud pumping music, guys making out, everything you can imagine. I even danced with some random guys and got felt up!! I also hopped on stage to dance for a little while, definitely somethin I will be doin again.
