I have been on going on and off since I was 20. It really depends on the bar and the location. Some are really scary places but there are a lot that are nice. Personally the scariest part for me is going into a place where I don't know any one. Always remember, if you don't feel comfortable somewhere you can always leave. Try different bars if you can. A lot of them are not all that different than "Str8" bars.

It may be scary if you go to the wrong one that dont appeal to you or your style.
if you go to a leather bar, the normal things that happen there may be to shocking for you as you have not been exposed to that type of stuff. Not that thiere is anything wrong its just the more butch place and attire that you may not have seen yet. Cus I have been to a few leather bars and had a great time, not my cup of tea but I hope you get what I am saying.
so go to bars that are more your age group so as to enjoy it with people around your age.
As you get more exposure you can go to others to see what they are like and make a decision as to what type you like most.
Going by your self will make you more nervous so try to go with a buddy. And dont risk things that you are not sure of. And for gods sake play safe if you do play, cus some times you will see something hot and things happen.
I started at 21 and although I never went alone as I had my b/f at 18 and I am still with the same one now 24+yrs
I never went to look for hook ups we went for the music/dance/people watching...

I´ve been going alone since age 21, I think.
Gay bars are really not scarier than any other bar that you´d visit, so there isn´t any good reason not to go, if you want to.

I've never gone by myself, but many times, I've split off from my friends. Just depends who you get talking to and meet.
On a side note I met my current boyfriend while I was sitting alone. So if you go alone, make sure you don't look creepy and make sure you look approachable.

Been going since I was 15(fake ID) with friends in high school. It was the 80's and the only bar a group of us could get into. I suggest you do some research online and visit websites of bars in your area to see what they have to offer in the way of what kind of bars they are. If you live in a city, there may be more choices than you are aware of to choose from. Good luck with it and try to relax and have fun. It won't hurt to say hello and smile first.
