Gay characters on TV. WHAT THE HELL?

I'm not sure if anyone watches Shameless? (Not even sure if its still running) Both the U.K and U.S versions had good storylines between Ian/Mickey. Non-stereotypical, serious, somewhat relate-able, and cute at the same time!

Though nothing has come close to Queer as Folk for me personally.. :)

Shameless has been mentioned on this thread a number of times, and for a good reason. It's one of the best depictions I've ever seen of gay men on tv. Seriously.. they treat the gay characters just like they do the straight ones.. it's gritty but realistic, funny and just incredibly well done. I'd say it comes second on my list of favorite tv shows (after QAF). I agree though, QAF is on the top and probably will be for a long time unless something changes, and I don't think it will, sadly. There's hardly any gay characters on tv right now and the ratio of lesbian characters to gay (male) characters is 10:1. But oh well.. hopefully gay characters won't be seen as taboo in the future. I think we're long off from them treating gay (male) sex the same they do lesbian sex though. With the exception of Shameless, QAF and Looking it has been awful. Even on Game of Thrones where they show VERY explicit lesbian sex the gay (male) characters weren't even allowed to take their pants off in bed! LOL.

Anyway.. moving on. A couple of shows I am however enjoying lately is Hit The Floor and The Village. The gay storyline on Hit The Floor is in all honesty something we have seen before, it's nothing new there. BUT I still like it because the guys are hot and well.. it's in the sports world and that's kinda cool. Then there's the British series The Village. It has a very good gay storyline with some really good acting and good looking guys playing the gay characters. Definitely worth the watch for sure. It airs on BBC.

Be thankful for those scenes as the GOT I have read so far(I'm up to book 4) have none in all honesty I had no clue that The Red Viper was Bi even. Yes Loras and Renly is hinted but unlike the show it is not spoken of really, I think a few know their sexuality in the books.

They mention that the Red Viper sleeps with boys several times before you actually meet him. I remember because I was immediately excited to meet him because, as you mentioned, it's only hint at with Loras and Renly.

Truthfully it takes that long for me to read the books I forget things lol.
Also wondering if a new thread should be started praising characters like Omar and those others we have mentioned as this is focusing on the negatives I wouldn't mind a thread on the GLBT characters like Omar who broke the model in all media not just TV.

OK, but the point is still.. if you're going to commit, then fully commit. Don't do it half way. Either include gay characters who get to kiss and have sex, or don't bother to include them at all. General Hospital has had more explicit gay sex scenes than GOT and that's a daytime soap ffs! You know it's messed up. Don't even get me started on the fucked up double standard on GOT when it comes to female nudity and lesbian sex compared to male nudity and gay sex.

And now they're going to make the one gay character on Downton Abbey straight after him being the only character on the show not having a love interest. You can't make this shit up. Fucking pathetic. Another character on tv that's now de-gayed. It's sad, even if it has happened a million times before.

Well considering the era most gay people had beards and hid behind straight relationships. But since I know one character was outed it does seem weird although if straight guys fall for men, Craig in Hollyoaks, Ianto in Torchwood, why can't it be the other way around.

So found this about Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey star Rob James-Collier has said that his character Thomas Barrow will have a "dramatic" storyline in series five.

The British actor told Digital Spy and others that the under-butler will begin questioning his sexuality by embarking on an "emotional" journey during the new series.

Thomas was previously caught trying to kiss a sleeping Jimmy (Ed Speleers), and was close to being sacked and arrested for indecent behaviour, before Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) saved him.

"Something that happens for the first time ever, he reflects and turns it inwards on himself and questions his sexuality and whether or not he could be happy as a homosexual man," James-Collier said.
"[He] goes on a dramatic path to find out if he can still be truly who he is. It's quite an emotional and valid storyline."

Explaining Thomas's conniving ways, he added: "He is how he is because society says he's a foul, twisted creature, and his religion says he's going to hell, so you adopt the role that society puts on you, so you become that person.

"It's a tremendous toll psychologically to not be allowed to love and be who you actually are. Society's hatred towards him he reflects back to society.

"They're all a target because they're part of the society that is alienating him."

Whatever, Downton Abbey is dead to me. The fact that gay men would DEFEND the direction the storyline is going makes me sick. No wonder producers don't give a shit about adding gay characters, or they de-gay the few that they have. They actually get away with it, especially by the LGBT community! Fucking patehtic. How do you expect them to add more gay characters if you continue to defend their fucked fucked up decisions?

Oh, and btw.. yes, at that time it was normal for a gay guy to hide and closet himself, trying to be straight. BUT in this case it's a total retcon and a sell out. It makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever. We're talking about Thomas here who have spent a DECADE being out (well.. as out as he could be in that time). He had no shame about who he was, he was confident and comfortable with his sexuality. He wasn't ashamed at all. And now all of a sudden, after TEN years of being out, he'll start to question it? Forget about the fact that it makes no sense. It's actually homophobic and offensive. We're talking about the ONE character that NEVER got a proper love interest (while all the other straight characters on the show did). It's offensive as hell. Not only that, it gives the wrong impression to the straight homophobes, thinking it's possible to change from gay to straight. You can't compare it to a discovery of your gay sexuality because it's a totally different thing. Making Thomas straight will give the idiots the ammunition they need to claim it's possible to "go straight".

I think you might be jumping the gun there sokker...

to me I'm not reading anything about him switching gears. We shall see until the series premieres I guess.

I hope he has a turning point in his story where he grows up and away from being a conniving twat... which to be honest is getting quite tiresome. He needs a bit of a extra look at his character, a new turn for his character.

I do understand why his character is the way he is. So I look forward to whatever this turning point is.
Even though I hate him but I do feel sorry for the character.

:)

So you think it's okay that Thomas is the ONLY character on the entire show WITHOUT a love interest?! Everyone else has had a love interest except him. And now he's supposedly going straight, sorry that's not ok. It's offensive and it makes the homophobes think it's possible to "turn straight".

The opinion I gave was based on not watching the show so I honestly do not know the character I was giving a general opinion but from what I read if I watched the showed I'd be a lot angry but I say watch the arc in full and see where they go and what they do with it.

Todd & Darren @ Grey's Anatomy 4x14

Rick & Drew @ The Night Shift 1x06

I won't be all negative you guys. How To Get Away With Murder has a pretty good gay storyline currently going.

Positive Gay characters are Dominion I loved that one line. Guy is gay does he fancy his straight friend no as he sees him as a brother and it would be weird, I fist umped the air at that. The Flash throw away remake by the captain about his boyfriend making them eat healthy again oh btw he's gay but it's not a big deal. Again I jumped for joy.

Now the negatives oh Emmerdale you are doing a Hollyoaks. A returning characters is Bi, never hinted at in any shape or form, and he's engaged but having an affair with a gay guy. Groaned when I saw this again for "exciting" storylines bi ppl have to have affairs with both genders. Gotham oh Gotham, through in the whole Barbra being bi and have here sleep with Renee her ex. Bit of girl on girl action for the fan boys. Disappointed at both these shows.

On a positive note, Nickelodeon's the Legend of Korra just ended with the pairing of the female lead, Korra, and her best friend, Asami.

The show's creators made sure to do away with any ambiguity by stating that their relationship is romantic.

Love that! I actually started watching the show just because the lead is LGBT and I love it! It's an absolutely fantastic show!

"Looking" on HBO is returning for Season 2 with 10 episodes on Sunday, Jan 11, 2015 at 10 PM. It's a good show.
