I didn't seem to see a thread devoted to gay fiction. I use to be an avid reader until I got hooked on audiobooks, now I'm an avid listener. If there a thread, please let me know. Now, I trying to find some more gay themed books to listen to. I've recent been thru 4 books featuring 2 FBI agents who are forced to be partners and thru love/hate, they end of fuck buddies, from there, lovers and eventually we have the struggle of who wants to say I love you first all the while battling serial killers, terrorist, drug smugglers, and thieves. It is called Cut & Run and it is Book One of a Four Book series (book Five comes out tomorrow). The books are written by women but the sex is so graphic, you would swear they were gay porn writers, lol. My fav writer is David Sedaris and I was a big fan if E Lynn Harris and I've listened to all of their books.

Does anyone have any other fav gay theme fiction? I'm looking to expand my library.

Timothy Conigrave's Holding the Man is a defining gay memoir that is touching, humourous and brilliant. I highly recommend it.

I have also read Rudi van Dantzig's For A Lost Soldier about his relationship with a Canadian soldier during the final months leading up to the liberation of the Netherlands during WWII. Also very good, very personal.

Of course, I recommend the Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin. Wonderful characters, brilliant storylines.

Also consider, the Donald Strachey series by Richard Stevens, the Michael Thomas Ford series Trials of my Queer Life and his Provincetown series of books beginning with Last Summer.

Last, but most certainly not least, I recommend Michael Cunningham's The Hours.

You could also try Maurice by E M Forster which is pretty well known and has been made into a film. Also look out for Alan Hollinghurst, his first novel was The Swimming Pool Library. Patrick Gale and Michael Carson are good gay writers too.

Excellent suggestion! I'd also look at Giovanni's Room (James Baldwin), The Wapshot Chronicle (John Cheever), A Single Man (Christopher Isherwood), The Front Runner(Patricia Nell Warren), and even The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde). Regarding Wilde's novel: homosexuality is not spelled out directly in the novel, but we do have a gorgeous man who has an aversion to women, and never ages.

Some of my other personal favorites:
The Object of my Affection (Stephen MacCauley)
Insignificant Others (Stephen MacCauley)
Almost Like Being In Love (Steve Kluger) <---very cute novel
The Family Man (Elinor Lipman)

I'm sure that I'm forgetting some, but these are the ones that come to mind, now. Most of the ones at the bottom are "cutesy," but I really enjoyed them.

'Almost Like Being in Love' is probably my favorite novel. It is sooo good.

^ Isn't it such a cute story! :) At first, I thought that it was way too saccharine, but I love happy endings. Besides, the characters were hilarious.

*Stephen McCauley (edit to previous post)

I suggest you try Storm Constantine's Wraeththu trilogy. The age of Man has reached its end, and a new race born solely from the male population arises. It's a great read, though things pick up in the second book.

MY first was Fritz Peters, Finistère, Farrar Strauss, 1951. Subtle and understated, but such was the time.

Great BDSM fiction, Mason Powell, The Brig, Alternate Publishing, 1984 (Out of print). (Amazon: new $395.00; used $22.00)

Also by Steve Kugler, MY MOST EXCELLENT YEAR. 3 best friends, teens. 1 straight white Irish American boy, 1 gay Asian American boy, 1 Mexican-American girl & their different experiences. It's Young Adult, but a very enjoyable read.

Scott Sherman has 2 gay detective (he's a NYC rent boy!!). FIRST YOU FALL, SECOND YOU SIN. A third coming out in the fall. They are LOL funny, & well written mysteries.

REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS I FORGOT. Bob Smith. Smith is a comic writer. This book is about a gay guy whose partner, a "converted republican" has invented a time machine, for Bush & Cheney. So, the guy ends up going back in time (you have to read it to find out how, it's a hoot) and try to prevent 9/11, as well as Bush's election in 2000, & some personal tragedies along the way (including his boy friend turning republican!). It's an out & out scream.

Anything by Greg Herren The Chanse MacLeod mysteries & the Scotty Bradley Mysteries are good. He has a YA called SLEEPING ANGEL about bullying & gay teens which is excellet.

Anything by Josh Lanyon. He has quite a few "series" type mysteries, the Adrien English series & the Holmes/Moriarty series (it's NOT Sherlock) are good. A stand alone THE GHOST WITH YELLOW SOCKS is a good mystery/love story.

I enjoyed the world Anne Rice, writing as A. N. Roquelaure, introduced me to in her Sleeping Beauty Chronicles. Not for the timid but innovative to the popular audience.

Of course, Anne Rice's VAMPIRE CHRONICLES.........

For a while, Anne was writing religious book (about Christ). She couldn't deal with the Catholic copverups on pedophiles & the Catholic hierarchy for it's ani gay & women stances. Anne's very out spoken on the subject, I follow her on FB.

Her werewolf book, just out, THE WOLF GIFT, is excellent, it also has a gay angle.

Christopher Rice, Anne's openly gay son is a good choice also. I'd catergorize his books as suspense. Gay inclusive, sometimes characters, sometimes plot, sometimes both. According to his blog, his next may be supernatural. Comes by that naturally.

'Almost Like Being in Love' really is a great story. I love the format, first. It's written mainly through emails, letters, newspaper clips, lists etc. Really cute. And I just think the characters are so quirky! Definitely my favorite novel.

I may be in the minority but I was also a really huge fan of the 'Rainbow Trilogy'. That series has a lot of memories for me. It was the first book I read that featured a gay character.

Also, definitely look up Christopher Rice's 'Light Before Day'. It's a gay suspense book. I couldn't put it down.

Suzanne Brockman The TROUBLESHOOTERS series. Ms Brockman, from MA, has been writing this series since 1993. For her openly gay son, & fans, she has included an openly gay FBI agent, Jules Cassidy (J Edgar is ROLLING in his grave) & some romance for him. Good stuff.
