They're biologically born men who dress and identify as women so "tranny" isn't a stretch. Contrary to popular western belief, most of them aren't hermaphrodites. As for them "not even close to being accepted by people of India," I didn't imply that they were, but it's normal to see hijras on the street and people walk past them as if they're nothing out of the ordinary (unlikely more liberal places), which I said in response to previous comment about "making it back alive."

And what exactly is a "real" Indian man and how are they different from the "Bollywood types"?

I have to go to work and don't have time to reply properly, I pretty much agree with everything you said on the topic of hijras, that's an interesting point about the way they're not stared at. Sounds like you know more than me, I was just a tourist after all, though sometimes we do see a different aspect of a country's way of life than the locals. I guess, like with many aspects of Indian culture, it's more complicated than it seems on the surface.

I guess I just prefer the Indian guys I see on the streets, trains etc of India to the guys on the movie screens, I feel the same way about western filmstars too.
